Changes to the iPhone 17 Pro's cameras have already been the topic of discussion a number of times now. Analysts and leakers are in agreement that Apple will work on two main areas in the successor to the iPhone 16 Pro. Firstly, the telephoto will increase to 48 MP, which means that all three camera sensors on the back, including the main camera and ultra-wide angle, will offer equally high-resolution sensors for the first time. Secondly, sensor behind the Facetime camera on the front will also be replaced and be able to take native 24 MP selfies.
All this has now also been confirmed by leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo, who is very well-known in the tech world in China and has often proved correct in the past (see screenshot below). Based on his sources, he confirms that a 48 MP 1/1.3 inch sensor will be installed for the main camera, a 48 MP sensor for the ultra-wide angle and another one for the 5x periscope telephoto. The optics of the main camera and telephoto are said to include glass and plastic modules (GP-Lens), and he also affirms the upgrade to a larger 24 MP sensor (currently 12 megapixels) for the front camera.
The iPhone 17 Pro has been subject of recent rumors mainly due to its alleged camera redesign, although it is unclear whether the prototypes, which currently appear to be equipped with a vertical camera visor in the Google Pixel style, will actually go into mass production. This will likely be clarified in a few months' time. Nevertheless, the iPhone 17 lineup will also be exciting for other reasons. For the first time, there will be an extremely thin "iPhone 17 Air" with a completely new design instead of the iPhone 17 Plus.
