The smart home seems to have been among the least and last of Apple's priorities for some time. However, following the failure of the OEM's first car, it seems the company is turning to much more accessible projects such as rivals for existing products such as the Arlo Video Doorbell 2K 2nd Generation (now available for $141.49 on Amazon).
Apple's renewed interest in the smart home is also reportedly connected to the prospect of being able to sell more services, such as iCloud space to store a user's personal security footage. On that note, the Cupertino giant's first-gen smart doorbell might be sold alongside Apple-brand indoor cameras as well as the HomePod Smart Home Display.
The new "homeOS" peripheral is reportedly in very early stages of development, and might indeed ultimately go the way of the Apple Car in the end. Nevertheless, it might still have a future as a product licensed out to other companies such as Belkin, as with next-gen CarPlay and its new place in high-end vehicles.
Either way, the "Apple Doorbell" is reportedly intended to support Face ID or something like it in order to let a user unlock their front door by simply looking at it. However, according to Bloomberg contributor Mark Gurman, it might also integrate with third-party smart locks in order to do so, which may or may not prove a vulnerability of the alleged next-gen security system.
