Possibly the most unexpected cost-cutting measure on the iPhone 16e is the omission of MagSafe, which has been available on iPhones since the iPhone 12 for attaching practical accessories and various charging devices. Apple has now provided an explanation for removing this feature from the iPhone 16e.

The Apple iPhone 16e makes a series of compromises in favour of greater affordability. The device lacks the brighter display, Dynamic Island, ultrawide camera, Action button and MagSafe found on the more expensive iPhone 16. Since the iPhone 12, MagSafe has enabled iPhones to not just charge wirelessly at 15 to 25 watts but also utilise various innovative accessories, such as the Leica Lux Grip.

However, the iPhone 16e doesn't feature the magnet ring and only supports wireless charging at up to 7.5 watts. Speaking to Daring Fireball, Apple representatives explained the decision to omit MagSafe from the iPhone 16e, stating that most of the people in the device’s target audience gravitate towards wired charging options and wouldn’t use inductive charging at all. Even if they do, Apple claimed that charging speeds may not be a huge concern for them. Nevertheless, the company didn’t specify who exactly makes up the iPhone 16e’s target audience.

The omission of features like MagSafe and Dynamic Island may also serve to encourage customers to choose a more expensive model over the budget-oriented iPhone 16e. That said, iPhone 16e users do have the option of using a protective case with a magnet ring to add compatibility with accessories such as magnetic stands or camera grips, ensuring they aren't missing out completely.
