At the end of 2024, BMW has begun teasing the upcoming electric M3 as the brand's M series first step into the EV market. However, the upcoming 2027 M3 lineup refresh will also feature models with a combustion engine. Conversely, the next-generation M4 Coupe will only come with an electric powertrain, likely the same one that powers the quad-motor M3. Currently, all electric BMW EVs bearing the "M" badge are equipped with dual motors, albeit connected to an AWD transmission.
According to BMW Blog, the BMW M3 Electric (ZA0) will launch alongside the next-gen G84 models, which would feature a combustion powertrain. Both should come out in 2027, two years before the alleged arrival of the upcoming electric-only M4 Coupe, which carries the ZA2 codename. BMW, without plans for a new ICE 4 Series, is certainly aiming to cut costs by using the Neue Klasse platform for both the M4 Electric and the NA2 BMW i4, set to arrive first, in 2028.
The aforementioned platform is quite flexible, and although the details are not public yet, it is certain that multiple configurations will be available. Rumors suggest a base power of 700 HP and a top-tier version with 1,340 HP. Since the upcoming M4 Coupe is currently on the drawing board, there are no certain features to talk about, although it is rather safe to assume that a design refresh is in the cards and the large kidney grilles will be replaced with minimalistic yet futuristic visuals.
