Could a wireless mouse double as a USB hub? Lenovo thinks so, and has set out to prove it with the AdaptX prototype. The proof-of-concept peripheral is compatible with a range of detachable modules rated to extend its battery life, ergonomics or even use-cases with extra handy functions.

Lenovo has brought its most cutting-edge ThinkPads and Yoga convertibles to CES 2025, yet also has a futuristic twist to its showcase with its latest "unique innovations", one of which demonstrates what might happen when a mouse gets modular..

The AdaptX' build might look questionable on first glance, especially given its almost Apple Magic-style flat profile. However, its bottom half can be removed and replaced with one that fits into the top part at a potentially more comfortable angle.

That represents just 1 of the AdaptX system's detachable, swappable modules, which also include one that reveals itself to be a miniature USB hub with an integrated type-C cable when removed.

Other replacement AdaptX bottom halves include a back-up battery that can also act as a power bank for other devices at need.

Lenovo indicates that they are to be joined by "holders" for memory and/or SIM cards, although it is not clear if it will be able to actually read them too in the future.

The Lenovo AdaptX Mouse has been presented in a range of colors that include gray, white, blue and black, the last of which has a frontal button finished in TrackPoint-like red (which might turn out to be ironic in the near future).
