Samsung has announced new microSD cards that are based on SEGA's Sonic characters. The cards, which are available in four capacities, are reminiscent of SanDisk's Nintendo-licensed microSD cards for the Nintendo Switch.
The new Samsung microSD cards are available in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage capacities. The 128GB variant is themed after Knuckles while the 256GB capacity is themed after Tails. The 512GB and 1TB variants are themed after Sonic and Shadow respectively.
While Samsung is officially referring to the new microSD cards as the Sonic the Hedgehog PRO Plus series, they are no different from the regular Samsung PRO Plus line of microSD cards. This means they have sequential read and write speeds of up to 180MB/s and 130MB/s respectively, an A2 app performance rating, and U3 and V30 speed class. They will also survive extreme temperatures and are protected against X-rays, drops, magnets, and immersion in water.
Like the regular Samsung PRO Plus microSD cards, they can be used in a variety of devices including handheld game consoles. The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to have support for storage expansion like its predecessor, so Samsung seems to be taking on SanDisk's Switch-themed microSD cards with its new microSD cards.
Pricing for the Sonic the Hedgehog PRO Plus microSD cards starts at $23.99 for the 128GB capacity. It goes up to $36.99 for the 256GB capacity, $68.99 for the 512GB capacity, and $125.99 for the 1TB capacity. Samsung will offer a 30% discount if you sign up on its website to be notified when the microSD cards are available.
If you don't care for video-game branded microSD cards, the regular PRO Plus microSD cards are on sale on Amazon. The 512GB capacity is 50% off and down to $37.99 while the 1TB version is currently $99.99, 17% off its list price.
