Sega unveiled an exciting new trailer during Sony's recent State of Play showcasing more of Sonic Racing: Crossworlds. Alongside the trailer, a PR at Sega posted on PlayStation's Blog, sharing further details from the Sonic team. Sega also reposted previously taken-down information, putting it back on their website as of the publication of this article.
To start the trailer off, after a brief shot of racing, we see Shadow enter a mysterious ring that teleports him and the other racers into a completely different track. These are known as Travel Rings and are the main gimmick of Crossworlds. The lead racer will get to choose which one that is traveled through on the second lap, leading players through various Crossworlds. According to PlayStation.Blog:
Each CrossWorld offers a theme park-like experience with surprises around every turn, including large monsters, engaging obstacles, and tracks filled with beautiful scenery.
Along with 15 CrossWorlds to go to via the Travel Rings, there will be 24 main tracks to play in Sonic Racing: Crossworlds.
For the first time in the series' history, Sonic Racing will take a page out of Mario Kart's playbook by putting full vehicle customization into the game. This means every selectable character can use every combination of parts. Similarly to Mario Kart, each character and part has different stats, so every player will be to able to build their vehicle to their playstyle. There will also be returning items as well as brand new ones, such as the Monster Truck. On top of this, there's a new Gadget system, which allows players to craft specific strategies for their particular build, with over 70 gadgets confirmed for the launch of the game. There's not a lot confirmed currently about how this system works, but the Sonic team has shared that as you play through the game, you'll get a considerably larger inventory to hold bigger and better Gadgets. We'll have to wait and see what they do with it when more is announced.
In another welcome addition, a fan favorite is back in the series, with the Extreme Gear from Sonic Riders returning to Crossworlds. According to the PR release from Sega, the extreme hoverboards will offer a "boost-based racing style" with this to say from Takashi Iizuka, Creative Officer at the Sonic Team:
In Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, not only did we want to introduce the innovative idea of racing through different worlds as you warp through the Travel Rings, but we also wanted anyone who had fun playing our previous Sonic Racing games to really enjoy this title, so we took a lot of elements from those past games and incorporated them. We included the Extreme Gear from the Sonic Riders series as well as the Transform feature from the All-Stars Racing series, making it a great culmination of all the Sonic Racing series games to date. I hope everyone really enjoys Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
There will also be a Closed Network Test (CNT) for those lucky enough to get selected. Unfortunately, the test will only be for PS5 users this time, but Sega notes that those who miss out on this CNT can look forward to future news before release.
