A well-received turn-based roguelike is free to play on Steam—but only until February 23, when it transitions to a paid title. You can claim it now to keep it in your library permanently before that happens.

A new turn-based roguelike inspired by Korean folklore seems to have caught the attention of Steam players. Mangui, an indie RPG, has been steadily gaining traction as of late. It boasts a growing number of "Positive" reviews from early players, and it is currently free to play on Steam - but only for a limited time.

Developed by Damulchi, Mangui brings players into a world influenced by traditional Korean folklore. The story follows four different protagonists, each with their own backstory and motivations for exploring the eerie Mount Mangui. There are multiple characters to choose from - a royal inspector, an apprentice shaman, a cunning thief, or a mystic venturing into the afterlife. Each character lends a unique perspective on the supernatural mysteries that unfold in the game.

As a turn-based roguelike, Mangui challenges players to navigate procedurally generated dungeons filled with spirits, monsters, and supernatural entities. The whole combat system revolves around skill combos and decision-making. The game also features a wide variety of items, weapons, and abilities that should add depth to each encounter.

Despite its dark folklore inspirations, many players have mentioned that Mangui does have a lighthearted charm to it. Reviews are especially all for its accessibility, describing the gameplay as straightforward yet polished. While the mechanics may not be as deep as some roguelike veterans expect, the game brings an enjoyable and casual experience to the table for players looking for something atmospheric yet easy to pick up. With a minimum requirement of only 2GB RAM and 600MB of storage, the game can run on older systems pretty easily.

The game is in early access at the time of writing this, but the developers have announced that Mangui will transition to a paid title on February 23. Players who add the game to their library before this date will be able to keep and play it for free even after the transition. The full release has also been moved up to early March. This limited-time free period of nearly a week gives new players a chance to try out the game before it officially goes paid. You can also take a peek at the gameplay trailer below.
