Released in 2009, Borderlands played a key role in shaping the looter shooter genre. These games combine classic FPS mechanics with a strong focus on collecting loot. Weapons and gear are randomly generated, keeping players constantly on the hunt for better items. Inspired by action RPGs like Diablo, this system provides long-term motivation. The latest entry in the series, Borderlands 3, is currently available on Steam at a 90% discount, dropping the price from $60 to just $6.
By the way: Borderlands 4 is on the way and finally has a release date. Announced during Sony's latest State of Play, the game is set to launch on September 23. However, the first gameplay trailer has received mixed reactions.
Classic Borderlands madness with new abilities
The story of Borderlands 3 takes place several years after its predecessor, taking players across multiple planets. At the center of the conflict are the Calypso twins, leaders of the Children of the Vault, who seek to control the universe’s chambers. Players step into the shoes of one of four new Vault Hunters – FL4K, Moze, Amara or Zane – on a mission to stop them.
The gameplay stays true to the series' signature formula: fast-paced combat, over-the-top weapons and endless loot. A key addition is the revamped skill system, allowing for greater customization. Each class has three active skills, providing more flexibility in combat. With over a billion possible weapons, all randomly generated, every playthrough offers something new.
Good reviews
Since its release, Borderlands 3 – developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K in 2020 – has amassed a huge number of Steam ratings. At the time of research, it had over 110,000 reviews, with 85% being positive.
On Metacritic, the looter shooter received solid scores from critics, earning a Metascore of 81. However, player reviews were far less favorable, resulting in a mixed user score of 5.6. One major criticism was that the story and humor didn’t live up to its predecessor. Additionally, the game faced technical issues at launch and was exclusive to the Epic Games Store for its first six months, which frustrated many players.
