A highly popular open-world RPG with extensive DLCs and mod support is currently 80% off on Steam, bringing the price down to just $3.

Released in March 2006, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion set new standards for graphics, non-linear gameplay and narrative depth, leaving a lasting impact on the open-world RPG genre. The story unfolds in the fantasy world of Tamriel, where the sudden assassination of Emperor Uriel Septim VII leaves the empire without an heir. Without imperial protection, portals to the hellish realm of Oblivion open, unleashing hordes of demonic creatures that threaten to destroy the land.

Players take on the role of a prisoner who is unexpectedly drawn into the unfolding events. The empire’s last hope is Martin Septim, the emperor’s illegitimate son – voiced by Lord of the Rings star Sean Bean – who is unaware of his true heritage. To stop the demonic invasion, players must find Martin and help him claim the throne. The journey can be approached as a warrior, thief or mage. While the chosen class affects which skills improve faster, there are no strict limitations, allowing players to adapt and develop new abilities as they progress.

Oblivion features a vast open world that players can explore freely. Beyond the main story, countless side quests offer additional adventures. Players can join various guilds – such as the Fighters’ Guild, the Mages’ Guild or the infamous Dark Brotherhood – taking on entirely different roles. A standout feature is the flexible progression system. Instead of earning experience points, skills improve through direct use. Fighting with a sword strengthens melee combat, while frequent spellcasting enhances magical abilities, allowing for organic character development.

Old, but still popular thanks to mod support

Powered by the Gamebryo engine, Oblivion was groundbreaking for its time, featuring realistic lighting and dynamic weather effects. Despite technical shortcomings – most notably the famously awkward "Oblivion Faces" – the game fostered a thriving modding community. To this day, mods continue to enhance the experience, offering improved textures, new quests and even entirely new gameplay systems.

80 percent discount on Steam

As of this writing, Oblivion has nearly 39,000 reviews on Steam, with a "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating of 95%. Its Metacritic scores are equally impressive, boasting a Metascore of 94 and a User Score of 8.5. For those who enjoy open-world RPGs and haven’t experienced Oblivion yet, this could be a great opportunity to try it – especially at a bargain price. With an 80% discount, the game is available on Steam for just $3 instead of $15 until February 24. This isn’t just the base version but the Game of the Year Edition, which includes many released DLCs.
