Even though the GTA 6 release date is still uncertain, gamers are already wondering about modding possibilities. If GTA 5 mods are any indication, user-generated content will keep GTA 6 popular long after players complete its single-player campaign. Digiday is reporting that Rockstar Games may have plans to embrace an entire ecosystem of custom content.
According to Digiday, Rockstar Games has contacted popular Fortnite and Roblox content creators. While short on details, the goal would be to design unique experiences that evolve gameplay. Last year, a GTA 6 leak circulated about Rockstar discussing a modding system with FiveM. The multiplayer servers developed by FiveM allow GTA 5 players to role-play in customizable worlds. In 2023, The publisher saw the value in this sophisticated form of modding, acquiring the makers of FiveM, Cfx.re.
While the subscription-based FiveM transformed GTA 5 multiplayer, Rockstar hasn't been as friendly to other tweaks. Most mods are banned from GTA Online, and installing single-player mods is far from seamless.
Developer-supported modding has become common, with Hogwarts Legacy as the latest example. Instead of downloading and extracting files on PCs, many titles have in-game content delivery systems. GTA 6 could benefit from a similar approach, and Rockstar's intentions seem to involve more than vehicles and cosmetics.
GTA 6 launching without evolved multiplayer or modding likely won't curtail sales. Although a PC version might not be far off, implementing some changes on consoles is trickier. The base game will also feature vast open-world maps to explore and a well-developed narrative. Still, its longevity will eventually depend on fresh and exciting ways to play GTA 6.
