New look for Vice City: GTA mod brings modern graphics – release slated for 2024
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Nextgen Edition, created by the Russian Revolution Team, offers a modern reimagining of the 2003 classic. With 95 percent of the work already complete, the mod is slated for release this year, though January 2025 has been set as the latest possible launch date - well ahead of GTA 6, which is anticipated for fall 2025. A story trailer was released on November 24, and a gameplay trailer is expected shortly. Fans will be delighted to know that the modification will be available free of charge.
The Nextgen Edition, built on GTA IV's RAGE engine, brings notable graphical upgrades to Vice City. Enhanced textures, realistic lighting and striking neon effects transform the city's appearance while preserving its iconic atmosphere. Staying faithful to its origins, the remake retains all story missions, characters and cutscenes from the original, reimagined with a modern touch. New features and thoughtful adjustments aim to refresh the gameplay experience without compromising its nostalgic appeal.
The developers describe the modification as both a tribute to the original and its community and a direct response to the backlash against Rockstar's Definitive Edition. Released in 2021, the Definitive Edition faced heavy criticism from players for its numerous bugs, inconsistent visuals and lack of attention to detail. In contrast, the reception on Reddit towards the new GTA mod has been overwhelmingly positive. Fans are impressed by its quality and hopeful that this level of care will be maintained throughout the entire game.
