A new report suggests that some of Xiaomi's 2025 smartphones might be powered by an own-brand chipset rather than one from MediaTek or Qualcomm as usual. The OEM has tried to develop its own silicon in the past, although it seems to be serious about the project this time. The processors might also feature in Xiaomi's next-gen electric vehicles (EVs).

Xiaomi has tried to join rivals Huawei and Apple in designing own-brand mobile device processors in the past; however, those initiatives have fallen by the wayside. For example, it did achieve this dream with the Mi 5c powered by the Surge S1; however, it was underpowered (and poorly distributed) compared to alternatives with Qualcomm silicon.

The OEM has continued to make its own sub-processors for specific functions such as power management and imaging, although it has stopped short of making its own full counterparts to Qualcomm's Snapdragon line or MediaTek's Dimensity series.

Nevertheless, the long-overdue S1 successor is ready for a 2025 debut, according to a new Bloomberg report. There are no indications as to whether it can possibly challenge the latest A18 Pro on its release in the form of its inaugural smartphone, although it is apparently intended to threaten MediaTek and Qualcomm's dominance on the Chinese market.

Xiaomi might have other reasons to develop its own silicon; for example, now that the OEM is an EV manufacturer, it will almost inevitably find its SU7-series successors ever hungry for chips of all kinds.
