GTA 6 is widely seen as the most anticipated game of all time. Since the first trailer dropped on December 5, 2023, however, official updates have been scarce. At least the official GTA 6 website has confirmed a 2025 release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Still, many in the community remain doubtful that Rockstar Games will meet this deadline. But according to a former Rockstar developer, a 2025 release seems very realistic.
Mike York, a former Rockstar developer who worked on GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, shared insights into GTA 6’s development in a now-deleted interview with Kiwi Talkz, which is already sparking discussions on Reddit. According to York, the game is fully playable and has entered its final testing phase. However, despite all content being complete, a game of GTA 6’s scale is likely still full of hidden bugs – eliminating them is now the top priority.
According to the former Rockstar developer, the team is now focused on identifying and fixing bugs to deliver the smoothest possible experience at launch.
"They're probably still making a few new things here and there or adding to things here and there, of course, but I would assume that the game's probably playable now, and a bunch of people are testing the whole thing all the way through"
When it comes to final testing, GTA 6 isn’t comparable to a more linear action RPG like The Witcher 3, York said. Player behavior in GTA is much harder to predict, requiring extensive testing across countless scenarios to ensure a smooth experience. This process takes time, but York’s insights suggest that development is well advanced and that a 2025 release remains on track.
