With the rather dismal launch of the RTX 5080 and the RTX 5090 out of the way, the wait has now begun for next-gen mid-rangers like the RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti. Nvidia has revealed the full specs of both GPUs and the pricing but has failed to provide any concrete release date.
Team Green has also detailed the expected performance of the RTX 5070 and the RTX 5070 Ti through first-party benchmarks. However, Nvidia’s first-party RTX 5070/Ti benchmarks are, frankly, terrible. As such, they can’t be used to ascertain the true gen-on-gen performance improvement over the RTX 40 cards in any meaningful way.
Thankfully, Moore’s Law Is Dead has now alleged the actual performance of the RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti. The leak also includes some nuggets about the launch supply of the RTX 5070 Ti.
RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti performance
Per the information provided by MLID, both the RTX 5070 and the RTX 5070 Ti aren’t anything impressive. The RTX 5070 Ti is reportedly only around “5-10% faster than the RTX 4070 Ti Super” in rasterization. The ray tracing gain stands at around 8-15%. Based on this, the RTX 5070 Ti appears unlikely to fare well against the RX 9070 XT which is expected to beat the RTX 4080 and almost match the RX 7900 XTX.
For the RTX 5070, MLID alleges a rasterization improvement of just 10-20% over the RTX 4070 with ray tracing “BARELY” seeing any gain. Interestingly, the GPU is said to go on sale in early March, right around the launch date of the RX 9070 and the RX 9070 XT.
If this leaked RTX 5070 performance is accurate, Nvidia could lose to the RX 9070, as the GPU reportedly beats the RTX 4070 Ti and the RX 7900 GRE. This would put the RX 9070 ahead of the RTX 5070, as the RTX 4070 Ti is around 22% faster than the RTX 4070 per our database. The case for the RX 9070 becomes even stronger when we consider that the card brings 16 GB of VRAM (4 GB more than the RTX 5070) and could be priced lower than the $549 of the RTX 5070.
RTX 5070 Ti launch supply
Sadly, the RTX 5070 Ti is expected to suffer the same terrible fate as its bigger brothers regarding the launch supply. Per MLID, the RTX 5070 Ti launch supply, although better than the RTX 5090, is going to be “VERY limited”. So, gamers should prepare for another paper launch if MLID’s report is accurate.
In the end, the stage appears set for AMD to wipe the floor with Nvidia this time around in the mid-range department. The company needs to just ensure the pricing of the RX 9070/XT handily beats the RTX 5070/Ti and there is plenty of stock to go around.
