We are set to see the first sub-$600 next-generation desktop GPUs starting in early March with the release of the RX 9070 on March 6 and the RTX 5070 on March 5. For Nvidia, this is a prime opportunity to right the wrongs of the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, and the RTX 5070 Ti by releasing a GPU that appeals to mainstream gamers. The company can do this by ensuring that the RTX 5070 is widely available at the $549 MSRP and is free from the recent performance-decreasing “missing ROPs” issue.
That said, hoping for an RTX 50 GPU that is easy to buy at the official MSRP might be too much to ask, as, after the horrible launches of the RTX 5090/5080 and RTX 5070 Ti, it appears that the RTX 5070 will also see a dismal debut.
RTX 5070 launch supply
According to the latest rumor shared by Moore’s Law Is Dead, customers will face as much trouble buying an RTX 5070 as they did with earlier RTX launches. Per one of the leaker’s “Major Online Retailer” sources, “the RTX 5070 may have a horrible supply at launch just like the rest of the series”. The source came to this conclusion because the retailer apparently didn’t receive any RTX 5070 cards for launch as of February 23 nor does it know when the first shipment of the boards will arrive.
In contrast, the source confirmed to MLID that the retailer “was stockpiling the RTX 5080 2 weeks before the official launch”. This is quite interesting, considering that the RTX 5080 had a pretty tight supply on release. So, the report that a major retailer was yet to receive the first batch of RTX 5070 less than a fortnight before the March 5 release is not a good omen.
Fortunately, buyers will actually have an alternative this time around in the RX 9070 if they don’t manage to buy the RTX 5070. AMD’s option is shaping up to be a serious contender with performance that seemingly beats the RX 7900 GRE at a possibly good price.
