As if the RTX 50 launch wasn’t bad enough, there are now reports that a small number of RTX 5090, RTX 5090 D, and RTX 5070 Ti GPUs have some missing ROPs. Nvidia has officially acknowledged the issues and claims that the missing ROPs will only result in a gaming performance hit of around 4%. While Nvidia’s figure is small, independent testing done by a gamer on their affected RTX 5070 Ti paints a worse picture.
RTX 5070 Ti with missing ROPs suffers a performance deficit
Per testing done by user “Der Zeitgeist” on their MSI GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Gaming Trio OC with 8 fewer ROPs than normal (88 vs 96), the card performed around 11% slower in 3DMark Time Spy Graphics vs ComputerBase’s results (24,755 vs 27,727). In the 3DMark Speed Way benchmark, the defective RTX 5070 Ti scored 7,046, 8% lower than the reference 7,665 score from ComputerBase.
Finally, the 3DMark Steel Nomad showed the least performance deficit between the RTX 5070 Ti with 88 ROPs and the RTX 5070 Ti with the full 96 ROPs. Here, the affected RTX 5070 Ti is around 3% slower than the fully functioning GPU.
So, putting it all together, the RTX 5070 Ti with missing ROPs has to contend with some performance loss which, in some cases, can go into double-digits as shown by Der Zeitgeist’s testing. It remains to be seen how much of a performance impact the fewer ROPs have in games. However, even if there is just a 4% deficit as Nvidia claims, it is still a bummer considering most gamers who’ve bought the RTX 5070 Ti have likely done so above the $749 MSRP.
For AMD, this is a perfect opportunity to nail the RX 9070 XT, Team Red’s RTX 5070 Ti rival. AMD is set to show off the GPU a few days from now.
