When it comes to highly anticipated remakes, Gothic is at the top of many wish lists – and now, fans finally have fresh updates. On February 7, 2025, THQ Nordic and Alkimia Interactive released the first episode of a new developer video series, offering a closer look at the modernization of this legendary RPG.
Respect for the original - but with modern technology
The video outlines the developers’ vision for the remake: updating the visuals and gameplay while staying true to the original’s essence. A special treat for longtime fans is the return of composer Kai Rosenkranz, who now has the chance to refine and expand the game’s iconic soundtrack. The goal is to preserve its familiar atmosphere while making it richer and more immersive.
The developers are also committed to preserving the game's authentic dialogue. The raw, natural speech of NPCs was a defining trait of the original and they aim to keep that intact. The classic progression system stays the same – players still need to find trainers to learn new skills, and early battles are intentionally tough to make character growth more rewarding. While the remake features a modern engine, the visuals will stay true to the iconic style of the original.
Update on the release date
There’s still no exact release date, but the Gothic remake now has a release window – it’s set to launch no later than April 1. A promising hint in the video description suggests more news is on the way: "Keep your eyes peeled for the Steam Next Fest (February 24 – March 3) for more Gothic glamour!" This could mean the developers will share new details during the event – possibly even the official release date.
