When it comes to video games based on DC Comics characters, Batman is Warner Bros' golden child, and this is evident from the number of video games based on the caped crusader. There have been requests for games based on other characters, but none have been released so far. Now, info has surfaced that a video game based on The Flash was in development but has been cancelled.
According to a Bloomberg report, the game was being developed by WB Games Montreal, the developer of 2013's Batman: Arkham Origins. The team originally wanted to make a game based on John Constantine, but was told by Ben Bell, the vice president of production, to make a game based on a more recognizable character such as the Joker or The Flash. The team chose the scarlet speedster. Unfortunately, following the failure of The Flash movie released in 2023, the video game was scrapped.
It is not clear if the game's cancellation was directly tied to the failure of the movie. There's also no info on how far the development had gone before the game was axed. However, there are speculations that the cancellation could be related to the fact that the DC film universe was being rebooted, and that the new universe is expected to have some video game tie-ins. Although James Gunn, who is one of those in charge of the new DC universe, revealed in 2023 that not all WB games have to be linked to the new film universe.
There have been a few video games based on The Flash in the past. In 1991, THQ released a video game based on the comic book character for the Game Boy. There was also a video game based on the CBS TV series released for the SEGA Master System in 1993. The character has also appeared in multiple other games as a playable character such as in Injustice and Injustice 2, and an unplayable character in Kill The Justice League.
