WB Games has been suffering from a string of struggling game releases. The free-to-play fighting title MultiVersus was the latest casualty with its recently announced shutdown. Even though Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League also had a lackluster reception, Rocksteady Studios developed the successful Batman: Arkham series of games. Bloomberg is now reporting that Warner Bros. is throwing up the bat signal again. It's likely years away from release, but Rocksteady is working on a new single-player Batman game.
The 2022 Gotham Knights was the most recent multi-platform Batman-inspired game developed by WB Games Montreal. Marred by technical issues, the RPG failed to achieve the success of the Batman: Arkham titles. Batman: Arkham Shadow was well received by critics when it debuted in 2024, but it's a Meta Quest VR exclusive. In an interview with Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and President David Zaslav claimed Rocksteady is returning the franchise to its proven single-player formula.
A new Batman game is only one part of WB Games' strategy to turn around its $300 million loss in 2024. However, while a Wonder Woman game is still in the works, the project continues to face obstacles. After talking with the publisher, Bloomberg explained that it's been rebooted yet again with a new game director. Its developer, Monolith Productions, is also contemplating a new title based on Game of Thrones.
What seems more promising for Warner Bros. Games is expanding on Hogwarts Legacy. The action RPG continues to enjoy a strong following, bolstered by new official modding support. The release of DLC for the game seems long overdue, but Avalanche Software still has plans for new content. Zaslav said Hogwarts Legacy was a priority but didn't provide much information about a highly-anticipated sequel.
The Batman: Arkham Trilogy combined a compelling storyline with engaging-level design and graphics. WB Games' problems are well-documented, so Rocksteady is anxious to reinvent the series for current-gen consoles.
