Made by a single developer during his vacation, A Game About Digging A Hole racked up millions of views on social media. It has a very simple premise - You just purchased some property, and now it's time to gather your tools and dig up your backyard.
It's a small, bite-sized adventure that is cheap and offers a few hours of fun. As the name suggests, the gameplay loop is very simple - Dig as deep as you can, sell what you find, upgrade your equipment, and then dig again.
As the hole gets bigger, you will need to invest in equipment like jetpacks to get yourself out of it. Every equipment upgrade makes you a little more efficient at digging, like Minecraft if it was limited to someone's backyard. There is also one secret for those dedicated enough to burrow down to the end.
The game was made by a solo artist on the Cyberwave team, developers of the upcoming open-world crafting game Solarpunk. The story goes that instead of relaxing on a 14-day vacation, Ben chose to develop a small game in that time. The crux of the idea took shape when testing terraforming and digging mechanics for Solarpunk. You can check out the game here.
