Samsung unveils new 1TB microSD cards with better power efficiency and reliability
Samsung has announced new microSD cards that adopt its 8th generation V-NAND technology. The new removable storage launches under the PRO Plus and EVO Plus lines and are available with a 1TB capacity. The EVO Plus and PRO Plus line of microSD cards are not new as they were first announced in 2021. However, the maximum capacity buyers could purchase was 512GB. According to Samsung, the new capacity is to provide users with a high-capacity storage option that is limited to SSDs. The 1TB PRO Plus microSD card has sequential read speeds of up to 180 megabytes-per-second (MB/s) and sequential write speeds of up to 130MB/s. On the other hand, the 1TB EVO Plus microSD has sequential read speeds of up to 160MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 120MB/s. Both microSD cards are rated UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) and Video Speed Class 30 (V30) for 4K UHD video. They are also rated A2 for app performance.
In addition, the new 1TB microSD cards have better power efficiency as their controllers are based on 28nm process technology compared to the 55nm of the previous lineup. They also have improved durability over extended periods and have been tested under harsh conditions. They can survive water, high temperatures, X-rays, and magnetic fields. They are also drop-proof and have a 10-year limited warranty.
The 1TB PRO Plus microSD card is priced at $153.99 while the 1TB EVO Plus will cost $131.99. Both will be available worldwide. While a lot of smartphones these days lack a microSD card slot, they are still present on a handful of devices such as cameras, tablets, handheld gaming consoles like the ROG Ally (available on Amazon for $399), and computers including Chromebooks.
