Not to be outdone by Honda and Sony's EV partnership that aims to bring PlayStation 5 gaming to its future cars, Tesla is now making good on its promise to launch Steam in those of its vehicles that can support the cloud gaming service. Namely, its performance Model S and Model X which have been shipping with a 10TFLOPS AMD RDNA 2 graphics processing subsystem since last year.
Named Steam Beta, the service comes with Tesla's latest 2022.44.25 "holiday" update that also brings entertainment such as Apple Music or the Mahjong game to the common folk who can't shell out for Tesla's higher-priced models. On newer Model S/X versions, however, it brings with it thousands of games available to play from the Steam roster, including blockbuster titles like Cyberpunk 2077. The latter was also promised to run on the Cybertruck by Elon Musk not long ago, so Tesla's first electric pickup will obviously have its infotainment system run on AMD computing power as well.
The Tesla-specific graphics subsystem is pegged as rivaling that on the PlayStation 5 in terms of processing power, but with half of its equipped graphics rendering memory hence bandwidth. Still, it should be able to play anything the Steam portfolio throws at it with sufficient quality for in-car entertainment.
In fact, Elon Musk took to Twitter to announce the new Steam gaming feature, saying that "you can play Cyberpunk, Elden Ring and 1000s of other games in your 'car' with an epic sound system," and then adding that besides wireless controllers, the Steam integration works with a mouse and a keyboard, too. This is something that Elden Ring players will surely appreciate.
Elon Musk is on record saying that he plays Elden Ring, and even shared an image from a Roman fortress in Bulgaria not long ago, marvelling at the stronghold area's resemblance to the atmosphere in the Elden Ring franchise. As for Cyberpunk 2077, he says that he played it a bit and "it works great," plus the Tesla integration feature "syncs with your Steam profile, so you can pick up where you left off at home."
