Tesla bringing Cybertruck UI to Model Y with AMD chip as new Model 3 gets hands-free trunk open

Owners of fairly new Model Y and Model 3 with Intel Atom chips might be a bit miffed to learn that they aren't getting the latest and greatest Cybertruck-style UI visualizations. Older Model 3s aren't getting the hands-free trunk open, too.

Those lucky Model Y and Model 3 owners, who happened to buy their cars after Tesla switched from Intel Atom to AMD Ryzen chipsets for the infotainment computers, are in for a visual treat.

For them, Tesla's upcoming Spring Release software update will bring the trendy new interface visualizations that it introduced with the Cybertruck, namely the interactive vehicle controls and other UI niceties:

  • Immersive full-screen vehicle controls when parked;
  • Large playback controls & quick access to Recents, Favorites, and Up Next in media player;
  • Expandable Autopilot driving visualizations, with a smaller map in the top right for trip guidance.

Late in 2021, Model Y Performance batches in China started emerging with AMD Ryzen processors, rather than the older Intel Atom chips that Tesla used until then. At the time, the AMD chips were only installed in the refreshed Model S and Model X.

Tesla then started equipping the 2022 Model Y and Model 3 with AMD Ryzen chipsets in the US as well, moving away from the old and slow Intel Atom A3950 processors, despite that the AMD chips were in fairly short supply still.

The GPU boost alone was worth the swap as it put an end to the UI stuttering and freezes, but it also made the 2022 Model 3/Y futureproof, as the latest exclusive Tesla software update with Cybertruck UI demonstrates.

Auto Shift in Drive or Reverse

If that is any consolation, none of Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y vehicles will be getting the Auto Shift (Beta) update that can switch between Drive or Reverse depending on the surroundings, instead of only getting out of Park automatically.

The new Auto Shift feature is reserved for the 2021 Model S and Model X, which are also getting increased brake regen on the highway, as well as automatic trunk opening.

Hands-free trunk open on the Model Y

The hands-free trunk open, in its turn, will only come to the Model 3 Highland refresh, but not to the Model Y, at least until its Juniper refresh next year.

"Stand still behind your trunk with Phone Key and the trunk will open on its own," says Tesla, hinting at the reason why the UWB-deprived Model Y isn't getting the hands-free trunk open feature. The technology is much more accurate than Bluetooth, which is why trackers like the Samsung SmartTag 2 come with both connectivity options.

All owners, however, are getting Sentry Mode video from the comfort of their own phones in the Tesla App 4.32.0 update, as well as trip details preview for the rear passengers wherever a touchscreen is available.

In select countries, Tesla owners can now "preview a brief clip of Sentry Mode recording on your phone if an alarm is triggered by pressing and holding notification." That's a pretty cool feature to have and determine if an immediate reaction is needed or not.
