Tesla Model Y Juniper may be released with touchless frunk opening
Tesla is rolling out the latest 2024.32.3 software update and with it come plenty of new features, such as touchless frunk opening.
Just like with the hands-free trunk open that was introduced in the spring, the touchless frunk opening only needs someone with a Phone Key function to stand in front of the frunk.
Unfortunately, Phone Key only works on iPhones for now, and not every Tesla vehicle has the Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip that makes Apple's AirTags tick, and is necessary for the hands-free opening of their trunk or frunk.
The Model 3 Highland and Model S refresh certainly have it, as well as the new Model X. Needless to say, the Cybertruck comes with all the latest and greatest hardware and connectivity options from Tesla, so standing in front of the pickup with an iPhone in your pocket or hand can open its frunk without touching it, too.
No Model Y however, supports the stable UWB connectivity needed for such features to work, despite Elon Musk's argument that its Juniper refresh won't come this year as Tesla is constantly introducing rolling upgrades. Not an UWB chip, though, for which one will probably have to wait for the Model Y Juniper refresh that will be released by April.
Tesla owners with the 2024.32.3 software update only need to switch the Hands-Free Frunk feature on from the Locks menu in Settings.
There, they will also find an additional option called Exclude Home. As it says on the tin, turning it on means that neither the frunk nor the trunk will open without touching them when the car is parked at home and the owner stands near it with a Phone Key-enabled handset in their pocket.
