While it is not yet clear if the new 2025 Tesla Model Y Juniper refresh will sport the rumored touchless frunk opening, there is at least one upgrade to the frunk that is a done deal.
In the list of improvements to the Model Y Juniper design, Tesla informs that the front trunk, or the so-called frunk of the facelift, it has now placed a draining hole at the bottom of the empty space under the proverbial hood of the vehicle.
This means that the Model Y Juniper frunk can be filled with ice, for instance, and use it as a cooler, instead of resorting to official Tesla accessories like the Cybercooler, or third-party solutions like the Portable Model Y fridge that goes for $699 on Amazon.
After the party, one can quickly unplug the new opening at the bottom of the Juniper's frunk and drain the water out.
As for the touchless frunk opening when approaching the car, similar to what's available on the Cybertruck, that is still up in the air, but Tesla would’ve bragged about it in the 2025 Model Y features overview.
At one of the Model Y Juniper promo videos, the button that starts the frunk opening animation doesn't have a pause or turn into a closing option at the end of the sequence, though Tesla warns to "Close Frunk" at the edge of the display.
Tesla does offer the touchless opening option for the rear trunk gate, though, so that's what the rumors might have been referring to. "A hands-free trunk automatically unlocks as you approach so you can easily store all your gear," tips Tesla and demonstrates how the feature works in a video with new Model Y owners carrying heavy bags of groceries.
