The NHTSA recently ordered a Cybertruck recall for the rare occurrences where the acceleerator pedal may get stuck because of an insecure pad of the low-lying floor hinge.
The pad "may dislodge and become trapped by the interior trim," reports the NHTSA in its argumentation of the Cybertruck recall.
All 3,878 or so Cybertruck units shipped to customers so far are being recalled, and some of them are sitting in service center lots waiting for Tesla's infamous 30-second fix that can be seen in the video below.
It involves using what is seemingly an off-the-shelf Milwaukee cordless drill and rivet gun kit to pierce a hole in the gas pedal, then rivet the pesky thing securely in place.
A less than elegant solution for a $100,000 truck, but it apparently does the job, and will certainly hold until Tesla outs the gas pedal hinge redesign with the new batches from the Austin factory.
In any case, nobody has been hurt by the Cybertruck's gas pedal mishap, reported Elon Musk, and Tesla is quickly applying the, well, quick fix so that it can resolve the NHTSA recall as fast as possible.
As for the most pressing question about the whole repair operation, the Tesla technician did vacuum the gas pedal hole shavings before placing the floor mat back afterward.
They also did use a fixture to center the hole in the gas pedal, though a black rivet would have been preferable if Tesla doesn't want this to look like a DIY solution.
