Range Rover EV: new electric 4x4 SUV struts its stuff in frosty testing teaser
Land Rover previously revealed plans to produce an electric SUV for 2024, and as the year gets into full swing, the luxury car company looks to be delivering on those promises. Land Rover recently teased its electric Range Rover, showing off some impressive control on the ice as well as providing some insights into a rather special-sounding custom drive train.
Aside from simply confirming that the Range Rover EV is coming, Land Rover also gave some insights into its drivetrain setup, which is an in-house system assembled, but likely not built, by JLR. Land Rover says that the new traction control system for its electric motors can direct power and torque on a per-motor basis — instead of relying on ABS torque vectoring — with a reaction time of as little as one millisecond.
There's no word on how many motors the Range Rover EV will have, but given the Range Rover nameplate's history of always having 4WD, dual-motors is most likely. If what Land Rover says about its traction control system is true, a tri- or quad-motor setup would provide impressive performance in suboptimal road or off-road conditions.
The exterior of the electric Range Rover looks to be identical to its ICE counterparts, however — a design that was updated recently enough that it will still likely look modern to most consumers, even a few years down the line.
Launch and pricing are both up in the air at the moment, but usually cold-weather testing like this happens close to the end of the production cycle, indicating a late 2024 launch window is possible.
If the Range Rover Electric launches anywhere close to the $100,000 price of the Tesla Cybertruck, it might give the two American EV makers a run for their money in the luxury space. Mercedes-Benz is also set to reveal an electric G-Wagon soon, while Audi's electric Q8 e-tron has shown off some impressive off-road performance, belying its luxury underpinnings.
