Elon Musk was 100% sure Cybertruck would play Cyberpunk but Steam gaming can't run on its limited hardware

Tesla's Cybertruck comes with a larger 18-inch display with higher 2560 x 1400 resolution and a next-gen HW4 computer, but Steam gaming still doesn't show on its infotainment system. Despite Elon Musk's certainty, Tesla's Cybertruck passengers won't be able to play Cyberpunk.

Back when the Cybertruck was still in the prayers of the first reservation holders, Elon Musk replied "100%" to a question "Is Cyberpunk on Cybertruck a guarantee?"

The comment was given in a thread where he announced that Tesla is working to bring support for the whole Steam gaming roster to its vehicles, including for Cyberpunk 2077.

Fast forward to the electric pickup's general availability, and it seems that the Cyberpunk-on-Cybertruck promise may have been empty, no matter how cool and futuristic it sounds. Granted, Tesla did make good on Elon Musk's Tesla Steam Deck promise, but only for newer batches of its refreshed Model S and Model X versions, the more expensive cars in its roster that carried more powerful computing hardware which has to be shared with everything else the EV does.

Those boast 256GB storage and 16GB RAM which seems to be the basic requirement for running Steam on a Tesla, in addition to the infotainment systems on them running on an embedded AMD Ryzen APU with dedicated RDNA 2-based GPU that provides 10 teraflops of graphics processing power.

Well, the Cybertruck is not one of the cheaper Tesla vehicles like the Model Y or Model 3, but, according to Tesla hacker Green, its next-gen Hardware 4.0 computer system seemingly still comes with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.

This might explain why nobody with the Cybertruck has boasted playing Cyberpunk on it just yet, even though Steam support is listed in the firmware. Currently, the Cybertruck's hardware limitations might not be making the cut for Tesla's Steam gaming feature, and that is why the option isn't appearing on the infotainment display.

Green also poked around the system info code and found that the big, beautiful 18-inch Cybertruck display comes with higher, 2650 x 1440 resolution, making the fact that its computer isn't allowed to run Steam a tad more disappointing. Unless Tesla offers paid retrofits, that is, like it did for older Model S/X batches.
