AMD's next mobile X3D processor could look very different from its predecessors. A reliable leaker claims the Ryzen 7 9800HX3D will combine eight Zen 5 cores with 96 MB of L3 cache, while one important change could make it available in considerably more gaming laptops.

AMD's mobile X3D lineup could finally be getting something other than a halo-tier 16-core processor. A new leak claims the company is preparing the Ryzen 7 9800HX3D, an 8-core gaming laptop CPU with 3D V-Cache that could make its debut around CES 2027.The information comes from reliable Weibo leaker Golden Pig Upgrade Pack, who says the processor had previously been floating around under the Ryzen 7 9755HX3D moniker.

AMD has apparently settled on Ryzen 7 9800HX3D instead, bringing its naming closer to the popular desktop Ryzen 7 9800X3D. As for specifications, the Ryzen 7 9800HX3D reportedly features 8 cores and 16 threads, boosts up to 5.1 GHz, and packs 96 MB of L3 cache. If the leak is accurate, the Ryzen 7 9800HX3D would be AMD's first 8-core mobile X3D processor. That's significant because AMD has so far, all of AMD's laptop offerings with 3D V-Cache have been 16-core SKUs.

Golden Pig claims AMD will not mandate a specific discrete GPU tier for laptops equipped with the Ryzen 7 9800HX3D. That would give OEMs considerably more freedom when configuring systems around the processor, potentially allowing it to show up alongside a much broader range of mobile GPUs. AMD's previous HX3D processors have largely been confined to expensive, flagship-class gaming laptops, often paired with similarly high-end GPUs. Between the Ryzen 7 branding, eight-core configuration and lack of an apparent GPU pairing requirement, the Ryzen 7 9800HX3D could make mobile 3D V-Cache accessible well below the traditional halo segment.

Hence, the 8-core Ryzen 7 9800HX3D could make AMD laptops more accessible to end users. Games generally don't benefit from doubling the core count from eight to 16 nearly as much as heavily threaded productivity workloads do. There could be another practical benefit for laptops. A smaller 8-core configuration potentially gives OEMs more room to balance CPU power consumption against the discrete GPU, although actual power limits and efficiency will ultimately depend on how AMD configures the chip and how laptop manufacturers implement it.

That's particularly relevant in gaming notebooks, where giving a power-hungry 16-core CPU more wattage doesn't necessarily translate into a better gaming experience. Golden Pig claims the Ryzen 7 9800HX3D is scheduled to enter mass production in Q4 2026. That timeline makes CES 2027 a plausible venue for its formal introduction.
