Dustwind: Resistance should feel particularly familiar to players who grew up with the old Fallout games. The post-apocalyptic tactical RPG combines old-school charm with tactical real-time combat – and has dropped below $10 on Steam for the first time.

In Dustwind: Resistance, a devastating war has largely wiped out civilization. A small farming community is trying to build a new life in the post-apocalyptic world – until a brutal warlord and his army of raiders invade. Players take on the role of a farmer named Jake, who subsequently becomes a resistance fighter and sets out to reclaim his home. Over the course of the campaign, Jake is joined by several companions, most notably his German Shepherd Diesel.

In terms of gameplay, Dustwind: Resistance quickly brings the old Fallout games to mind. From an isometric perspective, players lead a small squad through handcrafted missions, search for weapons and equipment and develop their characters' abilities. There is one important difference, however: Instead of turn-based battles, combat takes place in real time. The action can be paused at any time to issue commands, select targets or reposition the squad.

Combat is primarily about using the small squad intelligently. Enemies can be targeted at specific body parts, while friendly fire means players should make sure their own squad members stay out of the line of fire. Those who prefer to avoid direct confrontations can sometimes use stealth instead. Later on, even an armored vehicle provides additional firepower. The most unusual member of the group, however, remains Diesel: The German Shepherd can not only bite enemies but also carry equipment, place mines, throw grenades and, depending on his skill build, even perform medical tasks.

Steam players particularly praise Dustwind: Resistance for its well-designed tactical combat system, rewarding character progression and atmospheric post-apocalyptic setting with clear Fallout influences. Criticism, on the other hand, is directed at the very linear campaign, limited enemy variety and battles that can become repetitive over time due to the high frequency of combat encounters. Overall, 86% of the 67 user reviews submitted so far are positive.

Half price on Steam for the first time

The tactical RPG from Dustwind Studios normally costs $19.90 on Steam. However, a 50% discount brings the price down to $9.95 until August 19. According to SteamDB, this marks the first time Dustwind: Resistance has dropped below the $10 mark. On the Steam Deck, the game is rated “Playable.”
