A Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia combines turn-based strategy with real-time battles during the early Middle Ages. Make the right decisions, complete objectives, and use strategy to defeat your opponents.

Like many games in the Total War series, A Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia explores a specific period in history. In 878, King Alfred the Great has repelled the Viking invasion, bringing peace to his kingdom. But this peace is fragile, and many kings seek to claim the throne.

You’ll be able to rewrite a pivotal moment in British history by choosing one of the ten available factions. Whether you play as the Welsh, the Gaels, the Vikings, or the Anglo-Saxons, you’ll need to complete objectives and develop your kingdom, armies, and technologies to dominate your rivals. Each faction will face events and dilemmas inspired by history.

You'll fight in real-time tactical battles, allowing you to showcase your strategic skills. This means that you'll need to master your army and use the environment to your advantage.

Released on May 3, 2018, A Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia received a major update in December 2018. The Estates system was overhauled, introducing new gameplay mechanics. Recruitment was also reworked to balance the armies, and new buildings were added. Finally, Creative Assembly improved the AI, visuals, performance, and user interface.

A Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia is not the most popular game in the franchise, partly due to bugs and a lack of challenge in combat. Indeed, according to several players, it is possible to use the same strategy to defeat each opponent. Some economic mechanics have also been criticized, as has the user interface.

Nevertheless, 14,861 reviews have been posted on Steam, 70% of which are positive. Players appreciate the historical setting, some of the new mechanics, and the management system. According to SteamDB, it is currently 80% off and available for $7.99 instead of $39.99 until August 27, 2026.
