The MegaHub is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. As the name already suggests, this is a docking solution that is designed for the Apple MacBook Pro 16 (from $2,229 on Amazon). While the MegaHub uses USB Type-C ports, which theoretically make it compatible with other devices, the shape is specifically intended for the 16-inch MBP.
The dock measures approximately 14.4 x 3.5 x 1.1 inches and is partly placed underneath the Apple laptop. This creates a certain angle, which might have some ergonomic benefits. However, the notebook also becomes significantly thicker, so it might not fit into sleeves or bags specifically made for this device.
That being said, the MegaHub can be used to significantly expand the MacBook Pro’s storage, which can be much cheaper than Apple’s lofty prices for more SSD capacity. Specifically, up to four M.2 2280 SSDs can be installed and add a staggering 16TB of mass storage according to the manufacturer. This should be enough to handle large amounts of data, such as RAW or high-res video files, and makes external hard drives superfluous.
A maximum bandwidth of 1 Gbit/s is advertised, and the dock also features two USB Type-A, two USB Type-C ports with up to 100W PD, a headphone jack and an SD card reader. Backers of the Kickstarter campaign can reserve their unit of the MegaHub by pledging $158. Potential backers should be aware of the usual crowdfunding risk, which involves losing their money in case the product never makes it to market.
