Dell Inspiron 13 7306 2-in-1 laptop review: Compact convertible for drawing and creative tasks ↺
The Inspiron series laptops and convertibles are primarily meant for home users who are looking for a sleek device with good performance. The Dell Inspiron 7306 is a 2-in-1 laptop for creative types with higher demans for design and build quality. The Dell convertible uses an Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor. As of late 2021, Intel's well optimized 11th gen processor is almost considered old silicon, since Intel's Alder Lake mobile processors are set to launch in the very near future.
Despite the processor's low continuous TDP of just 18 watts, the laptop is well equipped for daily use with the Intel Core i7 CPU, 16 GB of RAM and a reasonable Toshiba 512 GB NVMe SSD. Dell promises full sRGB color space coverage and 300 nits, which would make the slim laptop appealing for professional users. According to our measurements, however, the laptop's display only manages to satisfy one of these two criteria.
In addition to the black version we reviewed, there are also two silver variants of the Inspiron 7306 2-in-1. Both models come with the same hardware and either a Full HD or 4K display. Meanwhile, only the black version includes a stylus.
Since there are numerous convertibles with more powerful processors, we've included the HP ProBook x360 435, Asus ExpertBook B5 and a few more for comparison purposes. As our benchmarks will show, the Dell convertible is not always able to set itself apart from its competition.

Chassis - Premium Design with a lot of Metal and Glass
The overall appearance of the 13.3-inch laptop is dominated by black aluminum and very little plastic. When folded up, the convertible's thickness is shy of 2 cm even including the small rubber feet. Since the display raises the laptop at the back by a few millimeters when opened to improve airflow, bigger feet are not required. Dell's inspiron 7306 then also reveals another feature: The back edge of the base unit doubles as a magnetic dock with two pogo pins for charging the included stylus. Dell does not need to use eccentric lines and instead relies on its great build quality to create a premium laptop aesthetic.
Upon manual inspection, there are a few weaknesses: Both the base unit and the screen make creaking noises when twisted from the corners. Similarly, the keyboard area slightly yields under pressure. The important part is that the amount of force required to slightly twist the chassis is small. The mechanical resistance only significantly increases after the material is already slightly bent.
At just 1380 grams, the Dell Inspiron is a very lightweight device and even when inside the carrying case, the thin laptop can hardly be described as heavy. Thanks to the additional display functionality that lifts the back of the base unit, the rubber feet are extraordinarily tiny. However, all competitors are similar in size.
Connectivity - Too few Ports despite Thunderbolt 4
Thanks to Thunderbolt 4, Dell's 2-in-1 laptop can at least be connected to a docking station. Regardless, this level of minimalism lacks practicality. One USB type-A and one USB type-C port that also serves as the charging port is simply too little. Thus, the laptop is very limited without a USB type-C hub with power delivery.
Card Reader
Even with our fast AV Pro UHS-II V60 reference memory card, the microSD card reader's speeds are not up to current standards. This is another area which can be improved with an appropriate docking station.

Communication
The Intel AX201 module provides Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 with moderate transfer speeds. While an upload speed of 919 MB/s will not top any current charts for the Intel AX201, the aluminum chassis is partially responsible and makes positioning the antenna more tricky.
Webcam
The 0.9-MP webcam of the Dell laptop suffers from high color deviations and an image quality that is generally poor. Thus the Dell laptop does not manage to set itself apart from other recent candidates. The integrated webcam shutter improves the user's privacy.
Security
The Intel Core i7-1165G7 comes with current security features such as TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. As such, Windows Update confirms the compatibility with the Windows 11 upgrade. Authentication via the fingerprint sensor integrated into the power button works flawlessy and consistently.
Accessories
Aside from the charger, the Dell laptop's scope of delivery also includes the stylus, which has two buttons and an eraser function.
Maintenance
We were pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to open the chassis of the Dell Inspiron 7306. All that is required is loosening seven Phillips head screws from front to back. Since the screws in the back pop the bottom plate open when untightened, removing it is not a hassle.
Conversely, the maintenance optios on the inside are limited. Only the M.2 SSD can be swapped.
Warranty
Dell offers customers 1 year of hardware service with onsite/in-home service after remote diagnosis. There do not appear to be any warranty extentions available for the Inspiron 7306 at this time.
Input Devices - Dell Inspiron 7306 with many Choices
Dell has left almost nothing to desire when it comes to the Inspiron 7306's input devices and included a good keyboard, a glass clickpad, a multitouch screen and a digital stylus.
Keyboard
Thanks to its pleasant backlighting, the Dell laptop's keyboard can be comfortably used even in the dark. While the 15x15 mm keys do not offer a particularly strong feedback, the haptic feedback is distinct. Overall, the keyboard of the convertible is very easy to get used to.
Touchpad
The premium glass touchpad will likely keep its sleek, matte finish for a long time, since the hardness of the glass prevents mechanical wear. Furthermore, the touchpad usually feels cool to the touch. For inputs, the touchpad's material is barely relevant. Multitouch gestures are recognized consistently and the precision is sufficient.
Touchscreen
In similar fashion, the touchscreen responds uniformly well to up to 10 simultaneous inputs. The touchscreen does not suffer from a significant, perceivable latency.
Digital Pen
At just 11 grams, a length of 13.5 cm and a thickness of 8 mm, the active stylus is comfortable to use. Different pressure levels are recognized reliably and even the "eraser" on the back is sensitive to pressure to some degree. Regardless of the pen's orientation, the drawing point is always precisely below the tip. For charging, the stylus can be put inside the slot between the hinges for a few minutes, where it is held magnetically. After only a few minutes, the stylus is ready for hours of work. Connecting the digital pen via Bluetooth enables the reassignment of the buttons to functions such as Microsoft's snipping tool.
Display - 13.3-inch glossy 4K Screen
The Dell Inspiron 7306's IPS-grade LCD has a native resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. Since the 4K display reaches an average brightness of 312 nits with a very even illumination, backlight bleeding only become noticeable in the enhanced depiction. We did not detect pulse-width modulation for brightness regulation.
Unfortunately, the black values of the bright display are nothing to write home about. This results in an overall contrast ratio of 1076:1.
The black version of the Inspiron 7306 is only available with a 4K panel, while the silver version is available with a cheaper Full HD panel.

* ... smaller is better
Although an sRGB color space coverage of 90 % is not ideal, it is unlikely that most user would notice. In our testing, movies and images looked good on the display in spite of it. Thanks to our Z-Rite i1 Pro 2 and the CalMAN calibration software, we are also able to attest to the panel's good factory calibration with a deltaE of just 3.91 for fairly authentic looking colors.

With an average brightness of over 300 nits, the screen should do well during outdoor use. Unfortunately, the digitizer suffers from reflections and refractions, which result in rainbow effects, depending on ambient light sources and the viewing angle.
The IPS panel offers excellent viewing angles. The display of the Dell Inspiron 7306 remains readable from every angle and without any color distortions.
Performance - Only 18 Watts continuous
At the time of writing, our configuration of the Dell Inspiron 7306 with the Intel Core i7-1165G7 and 16 GB of RAM is the only available model. Only the silver model's display option is flexible.
Test Conditions
The performance characteristics of the Dell laptop are controlled by the "Dell Power Manager" application. It allows users to choose between four profiles with the following results:
Setting | PL1 (duration) | PL2 (duration) |
---|---|---|
Optimized | 18 W (56 s) | 51 W (2.44 ms) |
Cool | 15 W (56 s) | 51 W (2.44 ms) |
Quiet | 15 W (56 s) | 51 W (2.44 ms) |
Ultra Performance | 26 W (56 s) | 52 W (2.44 ms) |
For the following benchmarks, the performance profile "Ultra Performance" was selected with the laptop on mains.
Processor
The economical quad-core SoC Intel Core i7-1165G7 is primarily used in compact laptops with slightly higher performance requirements. The processor was manufactured with the SuperFin process and has access to a TDP of 12 watts to 28 watts, selected by the OEM. In the case of our test device, the chosen TDP of 26 watts is only maintained for about 40 to 60 seconds under load before the convertible has to throttle due to thermal constraints. Subsequently, the continuous TDP sits at 18 watts. This is also illustrated by our Cinebench R15 loop, where the performance drops from 805 to 679 points after only a few loops. Running the benchmark when the processor is already warm results in a maximum score of 702 points.
Overall, the processor within the Dell Inspiron 7306 falls behind its competitors when it comes to the multi-thread performance. Only the Samsung Galaxy Book with the weaker i5-1135G7-Prozessor reaches even lower scores. By contrast, the single-core results of the Dell convertible paint a different picture. Here, the Inspiron 7306 achieves mostly excellent benchmark results. 16 GB of RAM with the highest throughput in our comparison certainly does not hurt in these scenarios.

GPU Performance
In the realm of graphics accelerators, chips integrated into the processor tend to fall on the lowest end of the spectrum. Thanks to the inclusion of memory with a relatively high throughput, the Intel Iris Xe with 96EUs achieves relatively good benchmark scores. This yields our test device a second place in this category. Although these results are still only suitable for a limited number of 3D games, video decoding is no problem for Intel's graphics chip even at 4K resolution.

Gaming Performance
While the Dell Inspiron 7306 will never be a true gaming convertible, our various gaming benchmarks show that occasional gaming on a laptop without a dedicated GPU is at least feasible. That being said, higher-than-medium settings both in terms of the resolution and quality rarely result in playable frame rates. For example, F1 2021, which has been highly optimized for Intel processors, is playable at Full HD resolution and medium details with 41 FPS, whereas several older games without optimization for Intel's (for now) latest processors begin to struggle much sooner.

Emissions - Is someone whistling?
System Noise
Unfortunately, the single, small opening creates a whistling sound at high fan RPMs. Although this was somewhat annoying during our benchmarks, it is barely an issue in everyday use. The fan only rarely runs at full speed and that is the only case where the laptop is even audible. While selecting the quiet mode from within Dell's Power Manager results in silent operation, there are some limitations to running the laptopwithout active cooling.

Stress test
Our log analysis quickly reveals the root of the low surface temperatures: Severe thermal throttling to 17 to 20 watts. The PL1 of 26 W determined by HWiNFO is only maintained for a few seconds. During daily use, this will most likely not be noticeable. However, this behavior becomes perceivable when using the laptop's processor to compress larger ZIP files, for example.
Speakers
The integrated speakers are fairly good considering the small form factor of the laptop. At volume levels of 65% and below, the sound is balanced. At higher volume levels, the treble becomes too dominant and the bass loses its punch.

Energy Management - Runtimes suffer from high idle Consumption
Energy Consumption
The energy consumption of the Dell Inspiron 7306 matches our expectations for a convertible of its size. However, the idle consumption values of its competitors are consistently lower on average. The processor's relatively low PL1 and PL2 values have a positive impact on the energy consumption under load. The low power draw of just 25 watts on average results in a diminished CPU performance.

Battery Life
The high idle consumption of the convertible adversely affects the battery life. Here, the Dell Inspiron is the worst performer in our comparison. Even though both the HP ProBook and the Dynabook Portégé offer shorter runtimes under load, they provide the processor with significantly more TDP headroom in battery mode, which makes the performance incomparable. Finally, a runtime of six to seven hours in our NBC Wi-Fi websurfing test means that the convertible's battery life is too short for it to last through a workday.

Verdict - There are numerous Alternatives
Our review of the Dell Inspiron 7306 leaves us with mixed feelings. Even though we are inclined to recommend it due to the clever design and good day-to-day performance characteristics, there are a few drawbacks. Prolonged performance-intensive tasks are not its strong suit, since the cooling solution is relatively weak, although the Dell convertible handles short bursts of demanding work well. With a high idle consumption, the battery runtimes are less than practical. Combined with the low number of available ports, the laptop is destined to be in a long-term relationship with a docking station. In this scenario, at least the transfer speeds will be quick thanks to Thunderbolt 4. The 4K display is decent overall, but its color fidelity is just average. Lastly, we like the 2-in-1 laptop's stylus input support and digital pen's well designed charging and safekeeping spot between the hinges.
The Dell Inspiron 7306 2-in-1's main advantages are its many small, intelligent design elements. Other than that, however, the device's performance is only average despite its Intel Core i7 CPU.
Those who are looking for an affordable convertible with stylus input capabilities may want to take a look at our review of the Asus ExpertBook B5 Flip, which offers far longer battery life and a better port selection at a significantly lower price than the Dell Inspiron 7306. The Dell convertible's performance is still sufficient for most use cases other than gaming or 3D CAD.
