NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU (Codename GN21-X6) is a high-end laptop GPU. It is based on the AD106 chip and use the Ada Lovelace architecture. The RTX 4070 offers 4,608 cores (of the 7,680 in the AD106) and a 128 Bit memory bus. The RTX 4070 mobile uses 8 GB GDDR6 dedicated graphics memory with a clock speed of 16 Gbps (effective). The TGP (Total Graphics Power) can be configured between 35 and 115 Watt (+ 15-25 Watt Dynamic Boost from the CPU) leading to different performance levels (the desktop RTX 4070 Ti uses 285 Watt for comparisons). The boost clock speed ranges from 1230 MHz (at 35 Watt TGP) up to 2175 MHz (115W). Therefore, the performance is also depending a lot on the power setting used for the RTX 4080 mobile in the laptop.

The performance should be below the desktop RTX 4070 Ti and therefore best suited for 2k and maximum details for demanding games of 2022.

Our synthetic benchmarks of an average RTX 4070 mobile show a performance slightly below a mobile RTX 3080 Ti. However, with reduced power limits, the performance is clearly suffering, e.g. only 70% in Time Spy for a version with 60W TDP. In games, a fast RTX 4070 is best suited for QHD gaming, where some very demanding games wont reach the 60 fps limit (and may have to run at 1080p, reduced settings or using DLSS). The RTX 4070 offers 144 tensor cores (4th gen) that enable DLSS 3 including frame generation for supported games. Furthermore, 36 raytracing cores (4rd gen) can be used for raytracing effects in supported games.

The AD106 chip is manufactured in 5nm at TSMC (4N process).

AMD Radeon RX 6800M

The AMD Radeon RX 6800M is a mobile high-end graphics card for gaming laptops. It uses the Navi 22 chip based on the new RDNA 2 architecture. It uses all 2,560 shaders (= 40 CUs), 160 TMUs, and 64 ROPs and therefore is similar to the desktop Radeon RX 6700 XT. The 192 Bit memory system connects 12 GB GDDR6 with 2 GHz memory clock. Furthermore, the RX6800M includes 96 MB Infinity Cache. AMD specified 2.3 GHz game clock for 11.8 TFLOPS theoretical performance at a TDP of 145 Watt. This means the GPU is in theory 11% faster than the RX 6700M.

The gaming performance of the RX 6800M (e.g. in the Asus ROG Strix G15) is positioned between a RTX 3070 and 3080. In some games the GPU can even surpass a fast RTX 3080. On the other side, when Raytracing effects are activated, it falls behind the GeForce GPUs.

The Navi 22 chip is manufactured at TSMC in the modern 7nm process.

AMD Radeon RX 6800S

The AMD Radeon RX 6800S is a mobile high-end graphics card for gaming laptops. It uses the Navi 23 chip based on the new RDNA 2 architecture. It uses all 2,048 shaders (= 32 CUs), 128 TMUs, and 64 ROPs and therefore is similar to the desktop Radeon RX 6700 XT. The 128 Bit memory system connects 8 GB GDDR6 with 2 GHz memory clock. Furthermore, the RX6800S includes 32 MB Infinity Cache. The RX 6800S is the power saving variant of the RX 6800M and features slower clock speeds and a lower TDP.

Due to the lower clock speed, the performance should be lower than the RX 6800M. AMD specified the performance between the low power variants of the RTX 3070 (80-100W) and RTX 3080 (80-100W, former Max-Q).

The Navi 22 chip is manufactured at TSMC in the modern 7nm process. Thanks to the reduced TDP, the 6800S is suited for thin gaming laptops.
