Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 (2024) review: Gaming laptop with RTX 4070 and DCI-P3 panel

With the Predator Helios Neo 16, Acer adds another model to the segment of midrange gaming laptops. The hardware corresponds to the targeted usage scenarios of gaming, rendering, and streaming: a Core i7-14700HX, a GeForce RTX 4070, 32 GB of RAM, and a bright IPS display with accurate colors (DCI-P3) in the 16:10 format.
While the Helios resembles its predecessor, they don't share exactly the same build. The competitors include other laptops such as the Aorus 16X 2024, Alienware m16 R2, HP Omen Transcend 16, Asus TUF Gaming A17 FA707XI, and Lenovo Legion Pro 5 16IRX9.

Case - Acer uses plastic and aluminum
The case shows good workmanship. Even though the plastic base unit and aluminum lid can be warped slightly, this remains within limits. Pressure on the back of the display lid doesn't cause any image artifacts. The hinges hold the lid tightly in place, with a maximum opening angle of about 150 degrees. The lid can be opened using a single hand.
In terms of the case color, black is dominating and only the fan vent covers in the back have a lighter gray color tone. Some color is added by the keyboard illumination and the illuminated Predator logo on the back of the lid.
The Predator is the heaviest and largest among the 16-inch laptops of our comparison field.
Equipment - The Predator is equipped with Thunderbolt 4
The well-rounded connection equipment includes three USB-A ports (1x USB 3.2 Gen 1, 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2), two USB-C ports (Thunderbolt 4; Power Delivery, DisplayPort), and three video ports (HDMI 2.1, 2x DP). The available connections are completed by an audio port and a Gigabit Ethernet port (2.5 Gbit/s).
The video and power ports are positioned on the back of the laptop, so the corresponding cables would run in the back and not be in the way. Acer has placed the rest of the ports in the center of the right and left sides, and the areas next to the palm rests remain mostly free of any cables.
SD Card Reader
The microSD storage card reader (reference card: AV PRO microSD 128 GB V60) runs at a leisurely pace, with maximum transfer rates of 20 MB/s (transferring 250 jpg files at 5 MB each) and 25.8 MB/s (copying large data blocks), which is not up to the current standards anymore. The competitors do significantly better here.

Communication
Under optimal conditions (no WLAN devices in close proximity and close distance between the laptop and server PC), the Acer laptop reaches very good WiFi data rates. Both the WiFi 6E chip (AX1675i a.k.a. Intel AX211) and Gigabit Ethernet controller (E3100G; 2.5 Gbit/s) come from Killer.
Webcam
The 2.1 MP webcam delivers average results, but at least it is able to score with a decent color accuracy. There is no mechanical lens cover.

Accessories
The laptop does not include any additional accessories besides the usual documents (quick-start manual and warranty information).
Maintenance
Warranty
Acer offers a two-year warranty (sending it in for repair) for the 16-inch laptop. You can expand the warranty to three years for an additional ~100 Euros (~$108).
Input Devices - The keyboard offers RGB illumination
Keyboard
Acer is using an overall average chicklet keyboard (with RGB illumination) that is suitable for everyday tasks and neither stands out positively nor negatively. Its smooth keys offer a short stroke, clear pressure point, and decent amount of resistance. The keyboard has some minimal give while typing, which didn't turn out to be any hindrance. The fact that the four arrow keys have regular size is a plus.
Touchpad
The multitouch capable ClickPad (~12.6 x 8.3 cm, ~5 x 3.3 in) doesn't stand out from the masses either. It offers a short stroke and clear pressure point, allowing fingers to slide across the smooth surface easily.
Display - Bright WQXGA panel with DCI-P3 coverage
The 16-inch IPS display (2560x1600 pixels) in the work-friendly 16:10 format scores with stable viewing angles, a lack of PWM flickering, short response times, a matte surface, and a high brightness (>500 cd/m²). The latter enables you to read the display contents outdoors as long as the sunlight isn't too bright.
Acer uses a 240-Hz panel together with support for G-Sync. With this, the refresh rates of the display and GPU are adjusted dynamically to allow for moving images that are as smooth as possible, particularly while gaming.
Note that apparently the LCD overdrive cannot be deactivated. The response times remain at the same level, regardless of the position of the on/off switch inside the PredatorSense software (control center of the laptop).

* ... smaller is better
The panel is able to cover the sRGB and DCI-P3 color spaces completely or almost completely, but the same isn't the case with the AdobeRGB color space. With this, the Predator display offers a better color space coverage than the panels from most competitors. Generally, the display already scores with a good color reproduction in the state of delivery, with a deviation of 1.7 (target: DeltaE < 3). An additional calibration lowers the value even further to 0.52, which is very good.
You can download and use our color profile for free. The link can be found in the info box for the display.

Performance - A lot of power, thanks to Raptor Lake and Ada Lovelace
The target user group of the 16-inch laptop from Acer includes gamers and creators. The laptop is run by Raptor Lake and Ada Lovelace. At the time of this test, the model of our test unit isn't available (in Germany) yet, but you can get a sibling model with 16 instead of 32 GB of RAM for almost 1,900 Euros (~$2,044). The most affordable model of the series costs about 1,500 Euros (~$1,614).
Test Conditions
The manufacturer offers six different system modes - four in mains and two in battery operation (see table). We used the "Performance" mode for our benchmarks and "Eco" for the battery tests. To use "Turbo" or "Performance," you need a battery level of at least 40%. You can switch between modes via key press (above the keyboard) or the PredatorSense software (control center of the laptop), with an LED indicating the mode that is currently active.

Processor
The 20 CPU cores (8P + 12E = 28 threads) of the Core i7-14700HX (Raptor Lake) reach maximum clock speeds of 5.5 GHz (P) and 3.9 GHz (E) respectively. Constant multi-thread load (CB15 Loop) is handled with a constant clock speed, independently of the selected power profile. However, the differences turn out rather low, with only the "Silent" profile reducing the performance significantly.
The benchmark results are slightly disappointing: Despite the four additional CPU cores and higher clock speeds, the multi-thread performance is at the same level as that of the Core i7-14650HX. Only in the single-thread performance is the 14700HX able to make use of its nominally additional power.

DPC Latencies
The system doesn't appear to be suited for real-time video and audio processing, and Latency Monitor revealed some conspicuous behavior during our test (web surfing, playing 4k video, Prime95 high load). Future software updates might bring some improvements or even worse latencies.

Storage Solution
Acer has equipped our test unit with a Samsung SSD (1 TB, PCIe 4, M.2 2280) that delivers excellent data rates. It is also positive that there is no thermal throttling during our test. The Predator is able to accept a total of two SSDs.
You can find measurements on all the SSDs and HDDs that we tested until now in our overview list.
