NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050 Mobile

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050 for laptops (GN20-S7) is a fast mid-range gaming graphics card for laptops. The RTX 2050 is based on the modern Ampere GA107 chip (like the RTX 3050) which is manufactured on an 8nm Samsung process (8N). Compared to the similar GeForce MX570, the RTX2050 offers Raytracing and DLSS support.

Compared to the old Geforce RTX 2060 Mobile, the 2050 offers more shaders (2,048) but a greatly reduced memory bus (64 Bit). It is available in different versions with with TGPs ranging from 30 to 45 Watt. The maximum boost clock ranges from 1155 to 1477 MHz. It features up to 4 GB GDDR6 graphics memory (14 Gbps leading to 112 GB/s max throughput).

The gaming performance of the mobile RTX 2050 should be clearly lower than the RTX 2060 thanks to the greatly reduced graphics memory bus. First benchmarks position a fast version slightly above a GeForce GTX 1650 and on the same level of a GeForce MX570. However, games that support DLSS can offer clear performance advantages thanks to the Tensor cores.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Super is a high-end desktop graphics card based on the Ada Lovelace architecture. It uses the AD103 chip in full configuration with 10,240 cores and 16 GB GDDR6X graphics memory (256-bit bus with 23 Gbits).

Performance

The ray tracing performance is outstanding, thanks to 80 dedicated cores, and the 320 Tensor cores can be used for DLSS 3.

The gaming performance without DLSS is ideal for 4k with around 60fps and 2k with higher frame rates in demanding games without ray tracing effects (e.g. F1 22 or Cyberpunk 2077). With ray tracing, the use of DLSS is recommended. Compared to the competition, the performance without DLSS and ray tracing is slightly better than the significantly cheaper AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT.

The currently available RTX 4080 cards are very large (2.5 or 3 slots) and use the new 12VHPWR connector (which has caused some problems with adapters).

Power consumption

The AD103 chip is produced at TSMC in 5nm (4N with EUV) and is specified with a TGP (Total Graphics Power) of 320 watts (Nvidia recommends at least a 750-watt power supply).

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 is a high-end desktop graphics card based on the AD102 chip using the Ada Lovelace architecture. The 4090 offers 16,384 of the 18,432 cores and 24 GB GDDR6X graphics memory with a 384-bit memory bus, and is clocked at 21 Gbits. The card offers an excellent ray tracing performance thanks to the 128 dedicated ray tracing cores. For AI calculations (and DLSS 3 in games), the RTX 4090 has 512 Tensor cores.

Performance

The gaming performance is very well suited for 4k gaming in maximum detail settings. Even ray tracing effects can be used without DLSS in most games. Compared to the competition, the RTX 4090 is the fastest graphics card in 2022, with the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and the RTX 4080 in second place.

Power consumption

The AD102 chip is manufactured in the modern 5nm process at TSMC (4N with EUV) and specified with a TGP (Total Graphics Power) of 450 watts. Nvidia is recommending an 850-watt power supply for the RTX 4090.
