AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D desktop CPU review: No chance for Intel's Arrow Lake against AMD's new gaming CPU with 3D V-Cache and Zen 5 architecture

Verdict - First-class gaming CPU with good allrounder capabilities

During our test, the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D delivered impressive gaming performance. Everyday applications additionally benefit from its increased IPC performance, making the processor a good basis for creative tasks. Compared to its predecessor, the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D delivers up to 25 percent more performance depending on the scenario—without an increase in its power consumption. This is a correct and important step in the right direction resulting in better efficiency, even though Intel is still ahead in this discipline with its Arrow Lake processors.

To summarize our results, we can say that the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is currently the fastest gaming CPU on the market. However, its increase in gaming performance compared to the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D is pretty small. Intel absolutely cannot keep up in direct comparison when it comes to gaming performance. A high, double-digit gap in the benchmark tests is already a big slap in the face for the new Intel processors—even if the difference is much smaller when looking at the more realistic gaming settings. The many small improvements that AMD has made to its AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D have ultimately paid off. The revised design of the CPU itself has noticeably increased its clock rates, while we measured a significant drop in its temperatures.

Above all, AMD's processors that feature 3D V-Cache deliver extremely high performance when running video games. Exactly this has already been impressively demonstrated by AMD in the shape of the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D. After AMD recently released the first processors in its 900-series based on Zen 5 architecture, it was only a matter of time before the successor to the popular AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D was launched. Today we can share the results of our test of the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, with the model being available for sale from November 7, 2024. If you were debating on whether to purchase an AMD Ryzen 9 with 3D V-Cache, we might have to put you off for the time being. AMD has not yet made any official announcements about the processors. However, if the rumor mill is to be believed, further models will follow next year.

We will therefore be focusing exclusively on the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D in this article, which is aiming to steal the crown as the fastest gaming CPU on the market. Intel only recently presented its new Arrow Lake processors, which weren't even able to keep up with the older AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D in terms of gaming performance. This gives AMD an easy game, because conversely, its biggest opponent comes from within its own ranks.

But let's first take a chronological approach and look at the processor's new features before we view its results in detail. Externally, nothing has changed, as the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D also uses the AM5 base—meaning an upgrade wouldn't cost the world if you already own an AM5 mainboard. However, there are lots of differences to be seen underneath the heat spreader. In addition to the newer Zen 5 architecture—which is manufactured in a 4 nm structure width—AMD has arranged the cache completely differently. The graphic shows that the cache has been relocated under the CCD (Core Complex Die). This results in significantly higher clock rates accompanied by lower heat generation. The CCD contains the actual computing units, still consisting of 8 cores and 16 threads in the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D. A native 8-core processor is currently an excellent choice purely for gaming, as the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D has already demonstrated perfectly. It also avoids the problem of thread allocation, which was partly present in the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D.

The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D's RAM clock is officially 5,600 MT/s, so a slight improvement. In most cases, the processor will likely be operated with an EXPO RAM kit at 6,000 MT/s. In addition to the processor and the mainboard, our reviewer's kit included a RAM kit to be used for the test. This means that we operated in a slight OC scenario during our tests when it came to the RAM clock rate. At this point, we would like to point out that the well-known mainboard manufacturers have so-called QVL lists, which show which RAM is compatible. It is therefore worth taking a look at these before you buy.

As far as the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D's maximum power consumption is concerned, nothing has changed. The manufacturer has stuck to the existing TDP of 120 watts. However, its maximum power consumption is limited by the PPT (Package Power Tracking) at 162 watts. Here too, there is no change compared to the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

The ASRock X870E Taichi acts as the basis for the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

All tests of the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D were carried out on the ASRock X870E Taichi. The recently introduced motherboards of the 800 chipset generation differ only slightly from their predecessors. The new flagship, the X870E, now always features USB4 and a wide range of USB 3.2 ports. In addition, a total of four M.2 SSDs can be accommodated on the mainboard.

The ASRock X870E Taichi is part of ASRock's Taichi series, although the optical gear elements aren't as present as on other motherboards made by the manufacturer. The elements are accompanied by subtle RGB lighting. It also comes with 1x 5G LAN for wired network connections, and it supports the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard for wireless connections. There are various coolers spread across the entire mainboard, which on the one hand give it its striking look, but are primarily intended to dissipate heat. A special feature is that both the SSD cooler above the graphics card slot and the SSD cooler, which is located next to the RAM slots, can be removed quickly and without needing to use any tools. You can unlock and remove the graphics card from its slot easily using the so-called EZ release. Similar systems are also available from other board partners. Unfortunately, this tool-free removal doesn't apply to all expansion slots. The two lower M.2 slots are located under a solid cooling plate, which in turn is secured with four screws.

Features such as the ASRock Auto Driver Installer, which provides all suitable drivers directly after installing the operating system, worked flawlessly during our test. The ASRock X870E Taichi supports DDR5 RAM with high clock rates of up to 8,200 MT/s and beyond. Up to 256 GB is possible with all four RAM slots occupied. However, it is essential to pay close attention to compatibility. We recommend taking a look at the QVL list (Qualified Vendor List) of the respective mainboard to ensure compatibility.

Testing conditions

We carried out all performance tests using the energy profile "maximum performance". We also activated PBO in the BIOS and loaded the EXPO profile of the RAM. We used a custom loop water cooling system as the cooling unit, which we have already used in the same form for previous CPU performance tests.

Processor benchmarks - Ryzen 7 9800X3D with 8 Zen-5 cores

Before we address the main purpose of the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, let's take a look at its pure CPU performance. On the basis of lots of individual benchmarks, the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D consistently showed a noticeable increase in performance compared to the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D. When looking at the averaged performance comparison, our test model ranked just ahead of the Intel Core i5-14600K. Even the recently released Intel Core Ultra 5 245K was left behind. The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is only at a slight disadvantage when comparing the new 8-core with the current top-of-the-range models. It must be said, however, that this comparison is inaccurate, as the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D's range of applications is clearly aimed at gaming enthusiasts.

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D during the Cinebench Multi-Loop

The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D mastered the Cinebench R15 continuous loop without suffering any visible drops in performance. Load peaks of just under 126 watts were only present for a short time. On average, approximately 105 watts were sufficient for the processor over 50 cycles. The load tests using Cinebench R20 and Cinebench R23 revealed a similarly stable result. The processor's power consumption was only slightly higher at a maximum of 130 watts. We noted no temperature problems at any point.

Synthetic benchmarks and application performance

The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D performs brilliantly during everyday use. However, the performance of all the processors listed in the comparison is so high that practically no model falls victim to any major blunders. In all tests, the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D's performance was surpassed. Even so, the two competitors were only separated by a few percentage points, meaning the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D unfortunately can't provide a noticeable performance gain.
