The Arrow Lake-S lineup represents the next generation of Intel desktop processors and are based on the new LGA 1851 socket. This means that not only the Raptor Lake models, but also the LGA 1700 socket introduced three years ago, are being retired.
The new Arrow Lake S processors are based on a hybrid architecture with a combination of powerful Performance cores (P-cores) and somewhat weaker Efficiency cores (E-cores). This hybrid architecture, which was first introduced in Alder Lake, is further optimized in Arrow Lake to ultimately enable better energy efficiency.
With Arrow Lake-S, Intel is focusing on a significant increase in performance in both the single and multi-core areas. In this review, we will take a step-by-step look at exactly what this means, as not all applications will benefit from the new architecture. Support for DDR4 RAM has been completely removed, which means that all LGA 1851 motherboards now use DDR5 RAM.
In addition, the integrated graphics unit has been improved and is now based on the Intel Xe architecture. This could provide a noticeable performance boost, especially in small systems that do not have space for a dedicated graphics card.

The Asus TUF Gaming Z890-PLUS Wi-Fi
As already mentioned, all Arrow Lake-S processors use a new socket, which means that a new chipset has also been introduced. Asus provided us with the TUF Gaming Z890-PLUS Wi-Fi motherboard for this test.
The Z890 chipset is soldered onto the motherboard, which means that a total of 48 PCIe lanes are available with the processor.
The Asus TUF Gaming Z890-PLUS Wi-Fi is part of the TUF series from Asus. The predominantly black mainboard is enhanced with a few silver accents, although there are no illuminated elements on the front.
RGB lighting is not completely absent, however, as there are a few LEDs on the rear, which also light up when the system is not switched on. However, this can be turned off in the BIOS.
The Asus TUF Gaming Z890-PLUS Wi-Fi supports DDR5 RAM with high clock rates of up to 8,600 MT/s and beyond. Up to 192 GB are possible when all four RAM slots are fully loaded. However, attention must be paid to compatibility, so it is worth checking the QVL (Qualified Vendor List) of the corresponding motherboard in advance.
The motherboard offers a wide range of connections, including several USB 3 ports and a USB 4.0 port. There is also a 2.5G LAN for the wired network connection, although the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard is offered for the wireless network.
There are various heatsinks across the entire board, which on the one hand characterize the look but are primarily intended to dissipate heat. One special feature worth mentioning is that at least the SSD heatsink above the graphics card slot can be removed quickly and without tools.
The graphics card can also be unlocked and removed from the slot without any problems using the Q-release. Unfortunately, this tool-free disassembly is not complete, as the heatsink in the lower area is screwed on.
The Asus TUF Gaming Z890-PLUS Wi-Fi is listed on Amazon for €378 and on Amazon US for $320. This means that the manufacturer is currently charging almost €140 more than you would currently have to pay for the Asus TUF Gaming Z790-Plus Wi-Fi.
Test conditions
We carried out all performance tests with the Ultimate Performance
energy profile. We also selected the Intel Default Settings
in the BIOS.
This means that the Intel Core Ultra 5 245K operates within the specifications provided by the manufacturer. We used a custom loop water cooling system as the cooling unit, which was already used in the same form for previous CPU performance tests.
Processor benchmarks
Let's now take a look at the performance of the Intel Core Ultra 5 245K in the raw CPU benchmarks. It is immediately apparent that the new Arrow Lake-S CPU cannot set itself apart from its predecessor.
In the performance comparison, the Intel Core Ultra 5 245K ranks on par with the Intel Core i5-14600K. Both processors have 14 physical computing units, which are divided into 6 P and 8 E cores. However, Intel has completely dispensed with hyperthreading in its latest processors.
Nevertheless, Intel manages to achieve identical performance in the average CPU performance comparison compared to the Intel Core i5-14600K can be achieved. If we go back even further on the timeline, the Intel Core Ultra 5 245K can even compete with the former flagship from 2021, the Intel Core i9-12900K.
In the duel with AMD, the Intel Core Ultra 5 245K achieves the performance of an AMD Ryzen 7 9700X, which is an 8C/16T CPU.
Basically, the Intel Core Ultra 5 245K delivers impressive performance, which, with a power consumption of 159 W, is lower than the Core i5 models of previous generations. This means that the processor not only works much more effectively, but is also easier to cool.

The Intel Core Ultra 5 245K masters the Cinebench R15 continuous loop without limitations. Peak loads of just under 166 W are only present for a short time, although the processor's average power consumption levels off at 128 W over 50 runs.
Thanks to our powerful cooling unit, the Intel Core Ultra 5 245K did not get warmer than 64 °C during the run.
Synthetic benchmarks and application performance
In everyday use, the Intel Core Ultra 5 245K performs just as well as all the other processors in the comparison overview. There are no noticeable differences to be found, although the results of the Core Ultra 5 245K only reveal a place in the midfield.
The performance of the Core i5-14600K cannot be matched, which is somewhat disappointing upon evaluation.
