Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Super 16 GB under review: Increased performance for the same money - promises, promises ...
Three Nvidia Super graphics cards were released in January 2024. In addition to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super and the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super, we can now officially report in detail on the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Super. For this review, we are using the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition, which matches the clock rates of Nvidia's Founders Edition.
Visually, the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition is similar to the non-Super version. Zotac presently sells the Trinity Black Edition, as well as the Trinity OC White Edition and the AMP Extreme AIRO. Compared to our test sample's plain black, both of the alternatives are slightly overclocked and have a significantly more visual appeal. Nevertheless, the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition offers some visual highlights such as discreet RGB lighting and the somewhat special cooler design. The craftsmanship is generally of a satisfactory standard. A lot of plastic is used, mostly on the front. A sturdy metal cover is installed on the back, giving the graphics card good stability and preventing it from bending. This cover is also used for heat dissipation.
The AD103 is still used for the installed GPU chip, which is now equipped with a total of 10,240 computing units. The VRAM comprises of 16 GB, meaning that nothing has changed compared to the vanilla counterpart. However, due to somewhat higher clock speeds, memory bandwidth also increases. The 320-watt graphics card is powered by a 12VHPWR. Zotac includes a suitable adapter from 3x6 + 2 pin PCIe to 12VHPWR.
There are still no significant changes to the external connections: 1x HDMI 2.1a and 3x DisplayPort 1.4a. Since the 7000 series, AMD has maintained its lead in terms of hardware sophistication by incorporating DisplayPort version 2.1.

The clock rates of the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition
As previously indicated, Zotac adheres to Nvidia's specifications for the GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition in terms of GPU chip and VRAM clock rates. The base clock rate is set at 2,295 MHz, with a specified boost mode of 2,550 MHz. During every game, we not only meet but also surpass this value, demonstrating that the graphics card has enough power to satisfy the specified requirements.
Zotac FireStorm Utility
The FireStorm Utility tool allows users to adjust various settings on the graphics card, as depicted in the following screenshots. It's worth noting that no modifications were applied during the testing process.
Synthetic benchmarks
Before delving into the gaming benchmarks, let's first examine the synthetic benchmarks. The Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition performs as anticipated in synthetic benchmarks. While it demonstrates a slight lead over the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4080 SG it's important to note that the KFA2 model is factory overclocked. However, there remains a noticeable performance gap compared to the Palit GeForce RTX 4090 GameRock OC, with Nvidia's flagship maintaining a 24% advantage in cumulative comparison.
In comparison to its rival from the red corner, the GeForce RTX 4080 Super holds its ground favorably against the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX. It outperforms the AMD counterpart in Luxmark and Computemark tests, although the Photoshop PugetBench test favors AMD graphics cards, even surpassing the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090. As expected, the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition falls behind in this particular test.
Professional uses
In the SPECviewperf render tests, the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition outperforms the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4080 SG. However, the performance difference is only in the single-digit percentage range. There is notably higher performance with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 or with AMD's 7900 series models. A comparison to the Nvidia RTX 6000 ADA Generation shows the performance that can be expected from a dedicated workstation graphics card. AMD's portfolio also includes specialist workstation graphics cards, known as Radeon Pro models.

Gaming performance
Like the regular model of the GeForce RTX 4080, the new super counterpart also scores exceptionally well in gaming performance. We tested a variety of games with the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition, and both older and current titles posed no significant challenge. In most cases, our test sample was positioned directly behind the Palit GeForce RTX 4090 GameRock OC. However, in a few games, AMD managed to gain a slight advantage, moving into second place with the Radeon RX 7900 XTX.
All tested games can be played smoothly in 2160p. When compared to AMD, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Super may be at a disadvantage due to its 16 GB of VRAM. Significantly more graphics memory is available with the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT and XTX, which have 20 and 24 GB VRAM. In terms of pricing, an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX appears to be the more sensible option, as various models are currently available for roughly $950.
Ray tracing, DLSS and Frame Generation
Nvidia's significant advantage lies in ray tracing performance, as well as DLSS and Frame Generation. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Super is equipped with 80 RT cores and 320 tensor units, providing a slight increase in performance compared to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080. However, users should not expect a noticeable performance gain in direct comparison. When using ray tracing in the native 2,160p resolution, DLSS is required. Additionally, there's another feature called Frame Generation for achieving even higher frame rates, but this one is exclusive to graphics cards in the RTX 4000 series.

Emissions
System noise
The GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition from Zotac comes with a sizable heat sink. On the front, there are three 90-millimeter fans. Additionally, the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition is equipped with a fan stop mode, allowing the graphics card to operate completely silently in 2D mode and under low load. The three fans run at a nice volume that is hardly audible from the closed case, even when they are under load. We occasionally noticed coil whining during our test, mostly in certain game menus, as soon as extremely high frame rates were attained.
To document the volume of the graphics card, we placed the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition on our volume measurement system in an open setup. We could not record any sound emissions when in idle mode since all fans were turned off. The fans spin slowly when there is some load, therefore we only record 32.5 dB(A). We reach just around 44 dB(A) at full load.

Temperatures and power consumption
The clever cooling design effectively manages the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition's temperature without excessively increasing its size. With the exception of the volume measurements, all tests were conducted in a closed case. The defined power limit of 320 watts is consistently reached during the stress test and can be maintained over an extended period. We observe slightly above 74 °C for the chip, which is within acceptable limits. In contrast, HWiNFO indicates only 68 °C for the VRAM during testing.
Now, let's dive into the power consumption of the test system: In this instance, the stress test displays an average of 425 watts, whereas gaming generates a display of 519 watts. Using the Elmor PMD (Power Measurement Device), we also examine the graphics card's power consumption through the 12-volt rails. To summarize, we repeatedly observe short load peaks of up to 450 watts and even slightly higher during gaming. The producer recommends a power supply of 750 watts, which should be followed due to these load peaks. It is also advisable to use an up-to-date power supply built according to the latest ATX 3.0 specification.

The Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition delivers slightly superior performance compared to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080, unleashing the full potential of the AD103 graphics processor. However, when pitted against an overclocked standard variant of the RTX 4080, there may be a deadlock in specific scenarios. Yet, adhering to the reference model ensures that you receive enhanced performance at the same price point. Nvidia's decision not to increase the cost might be attributed to AMD's recent price reduction for its top models, which now share a similar price range. Additionally, AMD maintains an advantage in terms of installed VRAM. The implications of this competition remain speculative for the future. Notably, the limitations of insufficient VRAM were evident in the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti.
Despite being a more compact iteration of the GeForce RTX 4080 Super, the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition continuously provides excellent gaming performance. The discreet RGB lighting is seamlessly integrated into the cooler, avoiding obtrusiveness.
The craftsmanship is satisfactory but could benefit from refinement. Internal connection cables for fans and RGB lighting slightly detract from the visual appeal. The fan cover, made from plastic, doesn't match the backplate's perceived quality. Subjectively, the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition stands out as a stylish graphics card. With its curved design, Zotac has successfully created a distinctive aesthetic.
Zotac's test sample impresses with consistently robust and stable performance. In certain aspects, the second-fastest model from Nvidia surpasses AMD's flagship, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX. For those considering ray tracing, opting for a current graphics card from the green corner is advisable. Priced at $1,399, the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition may not be a budget option. If the vanilla model drops to around $1,000 post the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Super release, considering the older model might be worthwhile. However, the market price stabilization of the graphics card after launch remains uncertain for now.
