KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX graphics card review: A compact mid-range GPU with great features and sleek lighting

We recently tested the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti's performance in the shape of an MSI GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Gaming X Trio 8G. At the time, it already became clear that the VRAM, with its 8 GB, is currently only partially sufficient enough to play modern games reliably, smoothly and with maximum detail settings. The GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX, which we will be testing in this review, may well succumb to the same weakness, as this model also "only" features 8 GB VRAM. Graphics cards based on AD106 chips and with more VRAM have already been announced, but as of yet, these are not officially available to buy.
Our test sample made by KFA2 is considerably smaller than the MSI GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Gaming X Trio 8G, and as a result, it faces far fewer problems when it comes to squeezing into smaller cases. In addition, the 25-centimetre long graphics card only has a 2-slot cooler. This means that adjacent PCIe slots can still be used and aren't blocked by a large cooling unit. We saw no deviations in power consumption, meaning KFA2's model also has to make do with 160 watts. Due to its low power consumption, the power supply isn't faced with any difficult challenges. Different to the Founders Edition of the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti, the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX utilizes the well-known and commonly used 6+2 pin PCIe power adapter. The reference model from Nvidia is equipped with a 12VHPWR connection.
The graphics card features all the usual external connectivity options. However, it still doesn't have DisplayPort 2.1. Subsequently, screens can be connected via HDMI 2.1a (1x) and/or DisplayPort 1.4a (3x).

Details about the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX
Compared to Nvidia's Founders Edition, KFA2 have given their GeForce RTX 4060 Ti E's boost clock a little more wiggle room. After all, our test sample is an OC model of the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti. On the standard profile, its rates are 2,640 MHz - a 105-MHz improvement. Using the tuning tool "Xtreme Tuner Plus", you can also activate the OC profile, which gives the graphics card an additional 15 MHz to work with (2,655 MHz boost clock). However, we ran all tests using the standard profile. We do not expect any performance increase through OC mode being activated, as the graphics card's boost clock rates were already way higher than expected in our benchmarks. The GPU's clock rates evened out between 2,700 to 2,775 MHz during our gaming tests. The KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX features the same amount of RAM as its predecessor, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. Although, at 128 bits, its memory connection has shrunk considerably, leading to a much lower memory bandwidth (288 GB/s).
Xtreme Tuner Plus - More than just an OC tool
Using KFA2's in-house tool "Xtreme Tuner Plus", lots of the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX's data can be read out. The tool can also be used with other graphics cards from KFA2 or Galaxy. Consequently, you can change its GPU and VRAM clock rates. You can also make changes to its power consumption, from 68 to 112 per cent. Additionally, you can change the GPU's lighting with the help of a variety of set effects, and you can also determine the speed of the fans.
The manufacturer also offers a mobile app (iOS and Android) as an additional feature. In this way, you can make all of these changes from the comfort of your phone. In order to be able to access the hardware, you have to make sure that both devices (PC and phone) are connected to the same network.
Synthetic benchmarks
During the synthetic benchmarks, our KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX came just behind the MSI GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Gaming X Trio 8G. This means that the considerably smaller KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX managed to keep up well with an extremely large graphics card made by MSI. It lay 7 per cent ahead of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. As a result, we didn't note a significant pure performance increase compared to the previous gen. This is a shame, because the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 was considerably more powerful than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090. An increase in performance within the same percentage area would mean that an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti would be supposed to achieve the same performance levels as an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090. As a mid-range model, this is unrealistic - however, a 20 per cent improvement similar to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti would've been great. Nvidia have simply made too many cuts. Its limitations compared to its predecessor are significant and due to its smaller number of shader units and smaller memory connection, it only achieved a one-figure performance increase.
On a small positive note, we would like to mention that its small increase in performance hasn't resulted in higher power consumption. Quite the opposite: Its good performance could also be attained with considerably reduced power consumption. In further course of this review, we will highlight this in more detail.
The KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX's AMD competitor is the AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT. This graphics card features a much bigger video memory (12 GB), however, it only came in 4 percentage points ahead of our test sample in the synthetic tests.

Gaming benchmarks
Regarding our performance expectations for the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX, you have to first note that Nvidia's target market for this GPU is gamers who primarily play games in 1,920 x 1,080 and who use high to maximum detail settings. In total, we would say the graphics card has fulfilled these aims, as a quick glance at the table listing the games we tested shows only green boxes when it comes to FullHD gaming. Only increased resolutions create some visible problems for the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX as it struggles to keep frame rates on a playable level. At the end of the day, this is to be expected and Nvidia offer the perfect products for the job - namely the GeForce RTX 4070 (1,440p) up to the GeForce RTX 4090 (2,160p) which both take care of higher resolutions.
In general, you are currently still well-equipped with a mid-range model from the 3000 gen, which can still achieve good frame rates at 1,080p. Subsequently, we would note the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX as rather an upgrade option from the older GTX era. Its increase in performance is huge and in case you also place great importance on up-to-date tech: it also supports features such as DLSS 3. This is exclusive to the RTX 4000 models and you could argue that this makes it worth purchasing. You also shouldn't forget its low power consumption. Here, the new Ada Lovelace architecture really shows its advantages over Ampere (RTX 3000 series).
On the other hand, we don't want to let KFA2's stingy treatment of its VRAM go unnoticed. We already talked about this in our MSI GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Gaming X Trio 8G review. We noted similar results with the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX, which casts a poor light on the GPU's generally usable frame rates due to its bad FPS low values.
Compared to its competitors, the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX still did well and in all areas, it came in on about the same level as the MSI GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Gaming X Trio 8G. Compared with AMD, the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EX often found itself up against the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 6750 XT. Even in higher resolutions, our test sample competed with the AMD card, even though the Radeon RX 6750 XT should offer considerably more room for textures thanks to its larger VRAM. Whether a 16-GB model of the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti will make a key difference - only time will tell.
