Players start each new campaign with a civilisation that has just recently developed interstellar travel capabilities. From there, players must grow their civilisation's reach, colonising far-away star systems and forging its path to ever-greater heights. The universes in Stellaris seems endless, as it's populated by procedurally-generated solar systems and alien species.
Stellaris integrates its combat, progression, and resource-management rather well without overwhelming new players too much, although strangers to RTS gameplay might want to look up a few guides and manuals before diving into the deep end. The game also features an interesting alignment mechanic, which defines your space-faring empire's personality and adds a degree of variety into the mix.

Age of Empires is the quintessential RTS game, and Age of Empires IV is another success for the franchise.
