Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC desktop graphics card review - How does Intel's most powerful gaming card with 16 GB VRAM perform?
It's already been a year ago that Intel introduced its desktop graphics card of the Arc series. Initially, there were multiple problems with its performance in many games, but with constant improvements of the driver, its performance capabilities were improved. With the Intel Arc A770, we are now taking a look at the top model of the series. You can look forward to 16 GB of VRAM, since Nvidia and AMD have only been offering 8 GB of VRAM in the 1080p gaming area for a long time. Only with the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, Nvidia now offers a model with more video memory. In addition, we also want to mention the Intel Arc A770 with 8 GB, since Intel offers it at a slightly more affordable price.
For this test, we use the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC, which is only available in the 16-GB version. Intel itself also offers its own models on the market, and with "Asrock" and "Sparkle," there are also two additional board partners that market the Intel Arc graphics cards. As graphics chip, the DG2 512 with 4,096 shader units is used. The 16 GB of VRAM are connected via a 256-bit storage interface, and in combination with the storage speed, this results in a storage bandwidth of 560 GB/s. Acer specifies a power consumption of 210 watts in the Standard preset, but we can already mention here that we are only rarely able to reach this in our test.
At first glance, the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC looks a little unusual, and we like it. A discreet RGB illumination and the high-quality workmanship with some metal elements also provide a good haptic impression. Each of the fans is constructed differently, which also differentiates it from the known designs of many graphics cards. The smaller fan is made completely from metal, allowing the extremely thin fan blades to push more air past the cooling fins. The Aeroblade design is also used in many laptops. Next to the PCIe 4.0 x16 slot, the power is provided via two 6+2 pin PCIe power connectors. With its external connections, the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC is almost up to the most current developments. In addition to the HDMI 2.1 connection, there are also three DisplayPort 2.0 connections. Nvidia only supports the 1.4 standard in its DisplayPort connections, while AMD offers DisplayPort 2.1 in all of its RX 7000 models.

The Clock Speeds of the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC
In terms of the speeds of the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC, we see a basic clock speed of 2,200 MHz for the graphics chip, which is at least 100 MHz more than in the reference model from Intel. The boost speed is 2,400 MHz, which can be maintained throughout all of our tests. The video storage offers a 2,190 MHz speed, resulting in a storage bandwidth of 560 GB/s. This is significantly more than is offered by the direct competitors such as the AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT or the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti. Acer specifies a power consumption of 210 watts for our test unit. When the Turbo mode is activated using the included tool, the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC can consume up to 235 watts. However, all of our tests below are performed using the Default mode (210 watts). A Silent mode, which throttles the power consumption to 160 watts, is also available.
Synthetic Benchmarks
For our initial comparison, we take a look at the performance of the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC in the synthetic benchmarks. Our test unit is only barely able to surpass the AMD Radeon RX 7600 in the performance rating, and the performance of the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC isn't quite able to match that of Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4060 Ti. But the disadvantage of only 7% turns out small. On the other hand, if we take a look at the benchmark results in LuxMark, the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC is able to assert itself easily, even being able to put some pressure on the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT. AMD graphics cards don't seem to like this test, and all models are unable to produce a convincing performance here. Compared to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti, though, the disadvantage of our test card grows to more than 30%.

Professional Applications
Often professional applications can benefit from special graphics cards that are optimally adjusted due to some driver adjustments. Nvidia and AMD both offer some special workstation graphics cards in their portfolio. But often, the current gaming graphics cards also offer a sufficient amount of performance to be able to implement various rendering projects. However, we still recommend using a special graphics card for professional applications, in order to get the best performance possible. Compared to the competitors, the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC is unable to produce a better performance, with even an aged Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super offering a significantly higher performance in parts.

Gaming Performance
The test results of the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC are very good, and we are surprised that we hardly run into any problems during the tests. But there are some differences between newer and older games. The Arc A770 is significantly better when playing newer games. So the performance of the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC varies considerably. In many older games, our test unit performs at the level of an AMD Radeon RX 6600, while at the same time, you can expect a significantly higher performance in newer games than with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060. But you have to make sure that Reziable BAR is activated to get the full performance from the graphics card.
Most games can be displayed smoothly in 1080p, even though there are some limitations. Among the more current games, Starfield is a bit of an outlier, but this could still be improved with some future driver optimizations. Another negative example is Forza Horizon 4, which is not good to play with the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC.
We should mention again that the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC was already introduced into the market a year ago. Compared to AMD's Radeon RX 6000 and Nvidia's RTX 3000 models, the performance of the Intel Arc A770 is at about the same level. With the introduction of the new graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia, the Intel Arc A770 gets more competitors, which also causes it to fall behind more. The rumor mill is working overtime, and with Battlemage, the successor of the current Intel Arc models is supposed to follow closely in the near future. But at this point, we don't know any details yet. With a decent performance increase and increased efficiency, Intel might be able to continue putting some pressure on the two top dogs in the area of gaming graphics cards.
The model used in this test is equipped with 16 GB of VRAM, which is good, since we even surpass the 8-GB mark already in 1080p. With this, we see significantly fewer frame drops at maximum details with the Acer Predator BiFrost Arc A770 OC. When we compare the P1 values, it is sufficient to barely beat the KFA2 GeForce RTX 4060. Due to the varying gaming performance, our test unit is unable to gain any larger advantage here. But the measured P1 values are fairly stable at the lower frame rates, ensuring a smooth gaming experience. With increasing resolutions, our test unit is able to move further ahead, and you can even enjoy some games in 1440p. The performance drop compared to graphics cards that are only equipped with 8 GB VRAM turns out significantly smaller.
