AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Desktop CPU Review: A frugal 8 core and 16 thread processor

Eight cores and still economical! AMD has continuously improved and optimised its Zen architecture since its inaugural release in 2017, with the company having just released its third generation in as many years. AMD manufactures its Zen 2 processors on the modern 7 nm process, which offers higher IPC than Zen+, among other improvements. Read on to find what the Ryzen 7 3700X, our first Zen 2 processor, can do and whether the jump to 7 nm offers as many benefits as promised.

The Ryzen 3000 series brings many innovations to the desktop CPU market. We have already seen 7 nm desktop components with the company’s Navi GPUs, but the Ryzen 3000 series features the first desktop-class processors to be manufactured on a 7 nm FinFET process. Moreover, they are also the first to support PCI Express 4.0, something which Navi GPUs also utilise.

AMD has also omitted an iGPU, with the CPU and I/O dies now housed separately under the heat spreader. This so-called chiplet design makes it easier to scale CPU cores, with AMD having already announced a 16-core Zen 2 processor, the Ryzen 9 3950X. The latter has two CCD clusters each equipped with two CCX modules, although AMD has opted for one CCD cluster and two CCX modules for the Ryzen 7 3700X. The Zen 2 processor supports simultaneous multithreading (SMT) too, meaning that it can execute up to 16 threads simultaneously.

The new CCX modules, which contain arithmetic units, are manufactured using the 7 nm method, but AMD uses a 12 nm process for the I/O die. The company claims that shrinking the I/O die to 7 nm would have produced no material advantages over 12 nm, albeit there is currently no way of checking whether this is true. We have seen 12 nm processes before with the Zen+ architecture though.

AMD has improved not only the volume of cache with the new Ryzen series but also the speed at which it operates. The company took a similar step between the Zen and Zen+ generations too. Thankfully, a new architecture does not necessitate buying a new motherboard, with a BIOS update for all X470 and B450 chipsets making them compatible with the Ryzen 3000 series. Even X370 and B350 boards are partially supported too, although we would recommend checking whether your motherboard will work with Zen 2 before buying a new CPU.

Unfortunately, full PCIe 4.0 is currently limited to the new X570 chipset. While some OEMs offer PCIe 4.0 support for older motherboards, this only applies to lanes directly connected to the CPU. Only X570 boards can fully provide M.2 SSDs on PCIe 4.0.

AMD recommends using DDR4-3733 CL17 RAM with Zen 2 processors. DDR4-3600 CL16 offers better value for money, but DDR4-3733 CL17 allows Infinity Fabric (IF) to run synchronously with the RAM, resulting in the lowest possible latency speeds. However, as the graph to the right illustrates, using higher-clocked RAM forces IF to run in 2:1 mode, rather than 1:1 as it does with 3733 C17, which increases latency speeds.

Processor Benchmarks

The Ryzen 7 3700X shows its best side in multithreaded benchmarks, where it even manages to outperform the Intel Core i9-9900K by a narrow margin. It is no slouch in single-core tasks either, and while AMD has closed the gap to Intel, the blue corner remains ahead of the game in this respect. Specifically, the Ryzen 7 3700X offers about 20% better single-core performance than the Ryzen 7 2700X. Our review unit scored 15% more in CB R15 Single 64Bit than the Threadripper 2920X too, although the latter has the edge in multi-core tasks thanks to its four additional cores.

AMD includes a Wraith Prism cooler in the box, the same one as it included with the Ryzen 7 2700X. The Wraith Prism cooled our review unit effectively during our CB R15 Multi 64Bit loop, with our test system finishing around 10 points shy of its original score. The scores fluctuated between 2,056 and 2,091 points during our loop, but this is not overly concerning. The Ryzen 7 3700X averaged 2,075 points, which is less than 20 points from its best score of 2,092. Incidentally, the processor scored almost 300 points more than its predecessor, an improvement of approximately 16%.

Gaming Performance

The Ryzen 7 3700X is ideal for gaming, as the graphs below demonstrate. Our review unit excelled in synthetic and game benchmarks and would have achieved higher scores with a more powerful GPU. However, we decided to pair the Ryzen 7 3700X with a Radeon RX Vega 64 GPU as we used the same card for our recent AMD and Intel desktop CPU reviews too, thereby eliminating any GPU variables from our results.

We have included separate results below of the Ryzen 7 3700X with a Radeon RX 5700 XT to show the performance potential of combining the two 7 nm chips. You can find the results in the section below.

However, the Ryzen 7 3700X lacks something compared to its Intel competitors. Generally, the processor performs on par with the Core i5-9600K at low resolutions, where the GPU is rarely a bottleneck. The Ryzen 7 3700X still handily outperforms the Ryzen 7 2700X though, with the change from 12 nm to 7 nm architectures bearing fruit. Typically, the former has about an 11% performance advantage in games compared to the latter with its higher IPC being an integral part of this improvement.

Application Performance

Our Ryzen 7 3700X-powered system performed smoothly during our tests, with there being no obvious loading times or system stutters. We also had a fast SSD on hand, so we decided to see whether PCIe 4.0 offered any improved transfer speeds over its narrower bandwidth predecessor. The 2 TB Corsair SSD that we used is a quick drive anyway, but PCIe 4.0 helped it achieve 69 MB/s 4K read speeds, which is exceptionally fast. This should help the system load small files quickly, which will reduce OS and in-game loading times.

We would question whether most people would notice the difference between PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 4.0 in daily use though. The latter will significantly improve sequential read and write speeds thanks to its doubled bandwidth, but the results feel negligible in practice.

The Ryzen 7 3700X performed well in PCMark too, with it scoring on par with the Core i7-9700K. The Core i9-9900K is the standard against which all other CPUs are currently measured here though, with the Ryzen 7 3700X being left in its wake. AMD has closed the gap to Intel compared to where it was with the Ryzen 7 2700X though.

AMD processors now, like those developed by Intel, exceed their stated thermal design power (TDP). The Ryzen 7 3700X has a 65 W TDP, although it can reach 88 W. We recorded a maximum power consumption of 86.6 W during our stress test, but our review unit could not consistently maintain this.

Likewise, our test system consumed around 170 W during our stress test, although this value excludes how much our test monitor was drawing from the mains. By contrast, our Ryzen 7 2700X-powered test system reached 211 W in the same test, with AMD specifying the processor as having a 105 W TDP. It is worth keeping in mind that not all X570 chipsets will consume as much as the MSI MEG X570 Godlike, which has several gadgets that need powering, like a display and RGB lighting. However, the X570 generally consumes more than the X470, which is why OEMs have returned to including unpopular proprietary chipset fans. The one on the Godlike board did not start during our tests though, for reference

We also looked at power consumption while gaming, although this depends highly on the GPU used. The Radeon RX Vega 64 reference design has a 295 W TDP, which resulted in our test system consuming 378 W when gaming. Our Ryzen 7 3700X test system is more efficient than all the other AMD-powered systems in our comparison table, but it consumes just over 10 W more than the Core i9-9900K. However, the Threadripper 2970WX system consumed a whopping 441 W during the same test.

Incidentally, the Wraith Prism cooler keeps the Ryzen 7 3700X comparatively cool. Core temperatures peaked at 74 °C during our stress test in an open test setup. Overclocking

We also tried overclocking the Ryzen 7 3700X, but with limited success. In short, you will need a liquid cooler to overclock the CPU, as our air cooler was not up to the task. We managed to get our review unit running stably at 4.25 GHz on all cores but only with PBO disabled, which impacts on single-core performance. The Ryzen 7 3700X can achieve 4.4 GHz on one core by default, so overclocking is rather fruitless in this regard.

The overclock did boost our test system’s CB R15 Multi 64Bit score by 100 points. However, this came at the cost of 10 W increased power consumption during our tests. So, while you are likely to achieve higher overclocks with a better cooling solution, we would recommend only temporarily running the Ryzen 7 3700X at overclocked speeds to minimise the risk of damaging the CPU.

AMD has put a lot of pressure on Intel with the release of the Ryzen 3000 family. The company has got a lot right too, while the reinvigorated competition in the desktop CPU market should be music to people’s ears. The Ryzen 7 3700X retails for 349 Euros (~US$390), pricing which currently pits it against the Core i7-9700K. The Zen 2 chip offers not only excellent multi-core performance, but it also thrives in single-core tasks, scoring just 4 points fewer than the Core i7-9700K in CB R15 Single 64Bit. The Ryzen 7 3700X supports PCIe 4.0 too, which it can combine with new Navi GPUs to achieve fantastic value for money but for the current crop of expensive X570 motherboards. The Ryzen 7 3700X and its Zen 2 siblings can run on older boards too, but you will forgo some of the speed improvements that PCIe 4.0 brings. However, an X570 board is currently the only way to ensure that the Ryzen 7 3700X remains future-proofed.

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X is excellent value for money, with the performance to match too. Zen 2 still falls short of Intel in some single-core tasks, but AMD has done a sterling job of minimising that performance gap.

Undoubtedly, the Ryzen 7 3700X offers better multi-core performance than all modern Intel chips, with it even outperforming the Core i9-9900K. It is worth keeping the Ryzen 9 3900X and Ryzen 9 3950X in mind if you are considering buying a Zen 2 CPU though. These processors will have 12 and 16 cores, respectively, with their improved multi-core performance making them more suited to gamers, streamers and content creators than the Ryzen 7 3700X.

Overall, comparable Intel CPUs have the single-core edge over the Ryzen 7 3700X, despite AMD having closed the gap with Zen 2. Our review unit impressed in games though, with the processor also managing its power consumption well during our tests. In short, AMD has made great strides with its Zen 2 architecture, and the Ryzen 7 3700X has closed the single-core performance gap to Intel processors like the Core i7-9700K.
