Long life Acer has had great success with the slim, light notebooks in its Aspire Timeline series. Having previously offered models ranging from 13” to 15”, Acer is now closing the gap between notebooks and netbooks with the 11.6” models of its Aspire Timeline 1810 series. While the 1810T has a single-core processor, we tested an 1810TZ with a dual-core processor.

Multimedia Notebook with Gaming Ambitions. The Toshiba A500-15H is especially aiming at movie fans with its 165 inch HD-display in a cinematic-friendly 16:9 format and its over dimensional Harman/Kardon loudspeakers. A Gamers' Dream? Asus shows courage for design and equips the G60VX with a white notebook lid with a futuristic stamp. There is also a Core 2 Duo T9400 and a GeForce GTX 260M that provide for exceptional performance values inside of the 16.0 inch case. We have looked at the notebook closer and clarified the question if Asus has achieved to make a replete gaming notebook with the G60VX that can impress even beyond its looks.

Up in the Clouds... Around a year and a half ago Steve Jobs introduced the MacBook Air. Even if it was partly refuted, it was advertised as the "thinnest notebook in the world". What was fascinating about it: at the time there was still no mention of the current ultra-slim trend. After the netbook boom there is now a trend towards especially thin notebooks, the Air now seems more in fashion than ever. Apple furthermore recognises the signs of the times, and overhauls the hardware equipment of the laptop.

The ThinkPad Evolution. Lenovo promises high performance packed in an ultra-light 14" notebook with its ThinkPad T400s. However, the low test weight of 1.75 kg isn't supposed to make compromises in view of the known ThinkPad quality or in the supply of equipment. Mobility, security and performance for business customers. With the Tecra family Toshiba bundles its business-line devices together, which should appeal to mobile business customers due to their security and performance features. For our test we had the model M10-1D7 available, which currently represents the flagship of the series, with an Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 processor and Nvidia Quadro NVS 150M graphics card.

Cheap Subnetbook? With the Ideapads, Lenovo wants to appeal to the price oriented consumer. With an energy-saving processor, integrated graphics card and three gigabytes of RAM, the light and slender U350 should be primed for ultra-mobile use with sufficient performance and a long battery life. A really sleek and cool (literally!) Cooling pad. The NC-09 is the latest in a series of cooling pad unveiled by this Taiwanese manufacturing giant. Lian Li is into manufacturing of Aluminum Chassis and Chassis peripherals, so it is not surprising that the NC-09 comes from them. This notebook cooling pad is meant for laptops of sizes ranging from 12” to 17”.

HP EnvyBook Pro. The new HP Pavilion Consumer Notebooks do not look a bit like being made of plastic: With the Envy Notebooks HP introduces two aluminium-flagships that are meant to set new standards regarding haptics as well as performance. Always at hand. With the Asus R50A the Microsoft Origami project sends its greetings. Origami Experience 2.0 is a software package that is specifically designed for Ultra-Mobile PCs by Microsoft. Based on Windows Vista, this allows ad-hoc access to required information on the go. The included WWAN 3G HSDPA module and GPS also meets the mobile communications character. All together the successor of the Asus R2H, and competitor of the Samsung Q1 Ultra, provides modern technologies, several useful features, and a navigation system in a pocket sized format.

New Territories? Whilst some manufactureres apparently can't wait, to churn out new netbook models onto the market, others have all the time in the world. Fujitsu could be named here as an example for mini-notebooks. Now the Japanese manufacturer releases its first netbook in a 10 inch format labeled M2010 on the market - over a year later than the emergence of the first mini-PC.

With a starting price of €319 (plus tax and shipping), the 15.4 inch Vostro 1520 is designed for small businesses and is extremely customizable – though this can rapidly push the price up to dizzying heights.

The Slim One. In the meantime, the Acer Timeline Series is available in several configurations and case sizes, whereas a persistently slim and light design is used. Acer’s motto: mobile, efficient devices at a low price, but which have enough computing power, anyway. Can the 1.71 kg light 13.3" subnotebook, with a declared 8 hour battery life deemed for business customers, keep this promise? Graphic Update. As Dell presented the brand-new Studio XPS series a few months ago, it was with high expectations on the multimedia bolides. The Eee PC netbook has grown! 'Netbook inventor' Asus presents its latest achievement in the Eee PC 1101HA. Although Asus is constantly expanding and adapting its range of small and mobile mini-notebooks, the difference here is clear from the first glance. For the first time, the netbook pioneer has produced a larger WXGA screen, at 11.6 inches. But despite the inevitable increase in size and weight, the Eee PC 1101HA is still focused on portability above all else. Read on to see how this €399 machine fares in our tests.

Sound-Pro Terratec promotes the DMX 6Fire as a professional audio system for USB 2.0. The extensive interfaces, such as phono input with a RIAA-equalizer and Gain-control, XLR microphone socket, MIDI ports, 6 analog outputs and 4 inputs, and a digital in and output is made-up to appeal to semi-pros. The DMS 6Fire USB 5.1 surround sound, however, doesn't give gaming fans EAX or OpenAL support. How the card does in the test can be read in the following review.

All in One? Asus sends a pricely attractive all-round notebook into the race with its N51V, which promises good performance values with a Core 2 Duo T6500 processor and a Geforce GT 130M graphic card. In connection with a 16:9 LED HD display, it seems to be interesting for hobby gamers as well as multimedia users. We have taken a closer look at the N51V and benchmarked it extensively.

Endurance Runner? With the TravelMate 8571, Acer brings a business model of its youngest Timeline range onto the market, which is supposed to impress with a battery life of over eight hours even remote from a socket. The pretty boy. Asus, the "netbook pioneer", constantly extends its portfolio, and with the 1008HA it has a rather different mini-notebook in its range. At a weight of 1.05 kg and prices from 380.- Euro it has to show in the following review whether the other qualities are convincing.

The new Samsung Q320, an attractive, dynamically designed notebook, is now facing our tests. The 13.4 inch display executed in an edge-to-edge design bids a 16:9 cinematic format.
