80% ASUS Eee PC 1008HA (Seashell) netbook
Source: Good Gear Guide English Archive.org version
When we picked up the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA (or the Seashell, as it is known), we could tell that it was one of the nicest netbooks on the market — if not the nicest. The ASUS Eee PC 1008HA (Seashell) is one of the best netbooks on the market due to its small size, good looks and relatively roomy keyboard. It's not perfect, but it's an appealing choice for anyone -- especially a traveller -- who wants a very mobile netbook that's still quite easy to use.

ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Seashell is traditional netbook with few very interesting features. With its low weight it reminds us why netbooks became popular in the first place, and with its elegant design it will attract users with refined taste. All in all: ASUS Eee PC 1008HA is prettier, better and pricier than most average netbooks.

Source: Liliputing English Archive.org version
The Asus Eee PC 1008HA with Windows 7 may have more RAM and hard drive space than the Windows XP model. But it gets an hour or two less battery life, which is disappointing, especially since the battery is not user-replaceable. It’s possible that this may be addressed by future software updates, but right now you have a choice to make if you’re interested in this slim and light netbook: Do you want a model with the latest Windows operating system, or do you want one that has a 5+ hour battery?

The team at ASUS took the popular Eee PC 1008HA Seashell and made it even more attractive thanks to the inclusion of Windows 7, extra RAM, and more storage. Yes, you have to pay an extra $50 for this "new and improved" version of the netbook, but it's money well spent. On the other hand, all of our previous complaints about the Eee PC 1008HA are largely still an issue. Although this netbook feels faster than the last configuration, the Intel Atom N280 processor is still painfully weak, and the Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics are equally limiting.

The Eee PC 1008HA Seashell is still one of the slimmest and most attractive netbooks on the market, and with this update you get double the RAM and hard drive space. However, the shortened battery life will give many consumers pause, especially with a $479 price tag. While the Toshiba mini NB205-N330BL runs the more limited Windows 7 Starter Edition and has a smaller 250GB hard drive, it offers comparable performance, lasts nearly 9 hours on a charge, and costs $80 less. Even the $399 HP Mini 311, which has a bigger screen and Nvidia Ion graphics, lasts an hour longer.

The latest EEE PC 1008HA, also known as the Seashell, merges a sleek finish with dramatically improved battery life. Samsung has enlisted the help of Japanese artist Naoto Fukasawa to give its new N310 the most arresting netbook design yet. Acer has followed up its under-performing Aspire One with a much improved 531 model. The numerous physical improvements have all but killed Acer’s price advantage, though. The Toshiba NB200 brings its own blend of design savvy and VFM, but it’s the awesome eight-hour battery that sets it apart. Last but not least, the formerly aloof Sony has joined the netbook wars with a scaled down Vaio that, by Sony’s standards, is cheap.

ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Review

Very good looking and desirable form factor with the exception of the bad glossy display and bad single bar mouse button. Keyboard is very nice, possibly nicer than the Asus 1000HE because there is less keyboard flex. Battery life was outstanding considering the small lightweight battery you’re carrying. The Asus 1008HA is probably the smallest netbook you can find that gets close to 6 hours of honest to goodness usable battery life. It performs like any other netbook with this type of hardware, and 720P video playback works fine so long as you’re using efficiently coded software.

Does a built-in battery reduce this model's appeal? The Asus Eee PC 1008HA more or less has the same innards as 1005HA, only they’ve sheared a good deal off its overall size and wound up with a netbook that’s only 1-inch thick at it’s thickest point and with the lid closed.  The Eee PC 1008HA looks as sleek as a high-end laptop, only without the price tag. Its looks are far removed from the OEM-looking netbooks of the past. This Asus Seashell does have the more powerful CPU that we wished for in the 1005HA and only at £80 more in cost, but it does make for a good all-round netbook.

Asus Eee PC 1008HA Seashell, we review the classiest Eee PC netbook so far
Source: PC Authority English Archive.org version
From the first moment you clap eyes on it, it's clear that the Eee PC 1008HA is an altogether classier beast than most of its predecessors. It looks gorgeous, feels great in use and, despite the captive battery, turns in a respectable performance away from the mains. Will it be possible to send the 1008HA back for a replacement battery once a few years of usage has permanently sapped its reserves. We're currently waiting for Asus to answer that. If you don't mind paying a premium for fine design, then the Seashell is a tantalising prospect.

Asus EEE PC 1008HA – a fancy 10″ Seashell netbook
Source: Netbooklive English Archive.org version
This one is their ultra-fancy 10″ netbook that combine the overall quality and performances of the standard Asus 10″ netbook with a slimmer, lighter and even better looking body: the 1008HA weights just 2.4 pounds and measure up to 1 inch in height. All in all, the 1008HA Asus EEE PC is a very interesting device. Might not be picked by most users, but if you’re looking for something lighter and fancier than the standard netbook, you should give it a try, if you afford the extra price. You won’t be disappointed, that’s for sure.

Asus Eee PC 1008HA Seashell netbook
Source: Geek.com English Archive.org version
To answer the original question–the 1008HA does trade off substance for style, but not nearly as much as you might expect. You get a slim design, a light weight, and a great looking computer, but you don’t get chiclet keys, the ports take an extra second to get to, the battery is not removable, and outputting video requires an extra step and an extra component. None of these are particularly problematic (possibly the battery), so I like the Seashell a great deal, but it’s not a netbook for everyone. At $429 there is a price premium attached to the great design as well, which is another small impediment, but not so much that it doesn’t warrant the extra few dollars. The big hurdle will be the battery life, but if you don’t need that much then you can certainly get by with what the Seashell has to offer.

The Seashell draws looks from people who don’t even know what a netbook is. The Seashell proves that netbooks don’t just have to be cheap, they can be lust worthy, too. Asus may have copped the original design from Apple, but it also paid close attention to execution while translating it to netbook form, and the final product makes a likeable spinoff. Those who find themselves smitten with its dainty good looks won’t mind paying $429 for the super-slim design, especially compared to much spendier alternatives like a MacBook Air, or Sony’s atrociously overpriced Vaio P. Buyers seeking a more practical (but still sleek) netbook may want to check out the very similar 1005HA Seashell, which gets a much larger removable battery and sells for $389.

Basically, if you select this netbook over the fantastic Eee PC 1000HE, you'll be doing so for style alone. Overall, you get less functionality for your money, but if you're willing to shell out for beauty and don't mind having a battery that you cannot replace, the 1008HA will perform just the same. From a standalone perspective, the new Eee PC 1008HA is a real step forward in the netbook realm. Asus has proven that netbooks can be different and unique, and it has proven that you don't have to charge a massive price premium to mix things up. We can only hope that this type of thinking catches on. We're growing tired of seeing every new netbook ship with the same internal specifications and the same shouldn't be the case for exterior designs.

At first glance, the new ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Seashell might not seem like an extraordinary netbook. Indeed, with so many netbooks using the same processor, integrated graphics, and standard 10-inch display, there isn't much on paper to make this netbook stand out in a crowd. Still, what the 1008HA lacks in performance, it makes up for in finishing touches. The thin and light design, extreme battery life, and nearly full size keyboard make the Seashell Eee PC a very attractive travel laptop. If you can overlook the integrated battery and weak HD video performance the 1008HA is every bit as good or perhaps even better than the competition.

With minilaptop competition heating up, even Asus--the company that practically invented the Netbook--has to step up its game. While the internal components will be familiar, the new Eee PC 1008HA (also known called the Seashell) represents a radical design change from the boxy Eee PCs we've seen before, with a slim, tapered design that makes it one of the best-looking Netbooks we've come across. Asus reinvents its iconic Netbook with the slim, attractive Eee PC 1008HA, a bold experiment that largely works.

ASUS’ new premium Eee PC is strikingly thin, but you’ll need to make some compromises. The Eee PC 1008HA Seashell is one of the slimmest and most attractive netbooks on the market, and with the latest Intel Atom processor and more than five hours of battery life, it has the brains and brawn to match its beauty. While it falls short of the endurance records set by other netbooks and has an awkward VGA port, the 1008HA is worth the slight premium over the 1000HE (about $30) for those seeking a healthy dollop of style.

The netbook market is dominated by laptops whose frames are thick slabs of unattractive plastics, and design is often sacrificed in the name of hitting basement prices. In looks, the new ASUS EeePC 1008HA (Seashell) is basically everything that the EeePC 1000HE isn't. Though the frame is still made up of plastic, it's noticeably thinner and lighter than the 1000HE while maintaining the 10-inch widescreen and 92 percent keyboard. The 1008HA is more cosmetically enhanced than the 1000HE, but it had to sacrifice a USB port and the removable battery in order to get there.

Get over hang-ups about built-in batteries and you'll see the 1008HA as not just a very, very sexy, slimline netbook but as an eminently portable and a powerful one too. The only aspect we don't like is the very limited upgrade path. We'd like the price to be keener, but you do get an impressive feature set for your money, certainly more than much cheaper netbooks provide. If you're willing to make a few trade-offs, this is one gorgeous netbook.

The Asus Eee PC 1008HA Seashell is thin, sleek, and light, and launches in the UK on May 15 2009. Asus may be spitting out more revisions of its Asus Eee PC netbook line than we can count, but at least its designers are continuing to look at ways to refine the machine. The 1008HA looks stunning and it’s sure to turn a few heads when you pull it out of your laptop bag on the train. It’s also incredibly satisfying to use – both the keyboard and trackpad are excellent and a cut above most other netbooks we’ve tested. The keyboard is at last on a par with the Samsung NC10’s when it comes to quality.

Asus returns with a netbook apparently inspired by a Seashell. Ideally we would have dismantled our sample, a) to check for a RAM expansion slot, and b) to fill such a slot with tasy RAM, but it was whisked away before we had chance. At 2GB netbooks come into their own -- you can wrench 720p out of a 2GB N270 -- so it will be interesting to see if the Seashell can be taken further.

Asus' Eee PC 1008HA Seashell (not to be confused with the Eee PC 1000HE) is a small, light and sexy device aimed at the fashion-conscious netbook fan who puts portability slightly above performance. It's available to buy now for around £375. The Eee PC 1008HA Seashell is a stunning netbook. It's very comfortable to use, extremely light and portable, and is a good all-round performer. For us, the Eee PC 1000HE's superior battery life makes it the better machine, but the Seashell holds its own in what is an increasingly competitive netbook market.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Atom: The Intel Atom series is a 64-Bit (not every model supports 64bit) microprocessor for cheap and small notebooks (so called netbooks), MIDs, or UMPCs. The speciality of the new architecture is the "in order" execution (instead of the usual and faster "out of order" execution). Therefore, the transistor count of the Atom series is much lower and, thus, cheaper to produce. Furthermore, the power consumption is very low. The performance per Megahertz is therfore worse than the old Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz on par with a 1.6 GHz Atom).

N280:

Power efficient, cheap and slow Netbook single core CPU. Because of the in-order execution, the performance per MHz is worse than Core Solo or Celeron M processors. Compared to the N270, the N280 is only minimally higher clocked and offers a higher FSB.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

10.10":

This is a standard display format for tablet computers or small convertibles. You see more on the screen than on a smartphone but you can't use big resolutions well. On the other hand, mobility is not a problem.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.

Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.

Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.

Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.

79.61%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
