Reviews for the Acer Aspire 8930G

Acer's featured-packed Aspire 8930G multimedia laptop offers everything you'll need. Acer's Aspire 8900 series of laptops has been around for a while now and has impressed us on numerous occasions. The Aspire 8930G-734G32BN promises to continue this, making it an ideal solution for demanding students and home use. With only the slightly spongy keyboard to let it down, the Aspire 8930G is a great media centre. It offers an exceptional feature set, impressive performance and is great value for money.

Thanks to a couple of reasonably primo parts, the Acer Aspire 8930 is a high-octane portable that's a solid choice for mobility minded gamers. And with a price tag under two grand, the Acer Aspire 8930 is a desktop replacement laptop won't blow your budget. The Acer Aspire 8930 offers a great combination of price and purpose. Our only reservations relate to our review model's lack of a Blu-ray drive (since the machine has a Full HD display but its video card won't run games at that resolution, you'll want something to show the screen off), as well as to the likelihood that you'll need to buy a new laptop bag to transport this 18.4in monster.

The Aspire 8930 is a neat little home-entertainment laptop with a great screen but poor surround speakers. The Acer Aspire 8930 offers a great combination of price and purpose. With a true 1080p display, the 18-inch Acer Aspire 8930 is a capable HD-content playback machine, but we'd spend a bit more for a Blu-ray-equipped version.

The Aspire 8930G continues the traditions of the previous 8920 with a few minor updates. Performnce is still quite strong thanks to the high end Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB of DDR3 memory. Acer has improved the graphics processor to a higher end GeForce 9700M model that is better able to support the very high resolution 18.4-inch display and an eSATA port for use with high speed external storage. On the downside, the Blu-ray drive has been removed from most models making it a little less useful for high definition video and they still don't have a FireWire port.

The Acer Aspire 8930G is a beautiful and well-performing multimedia notebook that boasts a true HD display and a killer sound system. Serious 3D gamers, however, may require more graphics muscle.

Having had our fun with all four units, we're hard pressed to actually come up with a clear winner. It's obvious that all four units have a different take on what an 18.4-inch desktop replacement should be and have their own strengths, but it's also obvious they all agree that size is key here. The Acer Aspire Gemstone Blue 8930G here comes out tops in our books for its value and performance, but we didn't quite like its fingerprint magnet surface and glossy screen.

Naysayers will argue that the $1,699 Acer Aspire 8930G is an incremental upgrade over the 8920G, but when a formula works very well, there isn’t much need for a full-scale change. The system’s powerful processor, improved graphics muscle, and striking design makes it one of the best desktop replacements around.

Comment
NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GT: Successor of the 8700M GT and technically a higher clocked 9600M GT. Improved video engine for decoding HD videos (PureVideo HD - VP2), HybridPower, CUDA, and PhysX support.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
P8400:
Middle class dual core CPU with a TDP of 25 Watt. For high end gamer the performance could be not sufficient (for class 1 graphic cards).
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.18.40": This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
4.1 kg:
A laptop in this weight range is a heavyweight that you rarely carry around. This is meant for desktops and the devices tend to score with a large display and high performance and replace desktop devices.
Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.
Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.
80.82%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
