Archive.org versionThere’s one thing that would stop me from unconditionally recommending this laptop… and that is the abysmal mouse/trackpad. It just wasn’t responsive enough, and I found myself more often than not fighting it just to get it to go where I wanted. The mouse buttons were very stiff and non-responsive, and while you could solve the whole problem by plugging in a USB mouse, that negates the notion of a truly “mobile” computer, which is unfortunate, considering everything else this laptop has going for it.

Archive.org versionAsus has had a bumper crop of laptops over the last year. From EeePC netbooks to Ferrari laptops, we've seen a wealth of concept systems head through the lab doors. What we weren't prepared for was a laptop with a scent. When we opened the box, it was noticeably ... green-smelling. Not quite a pine-tree car-air-freshener scent, but certainly noticeable. It fades quickly unless it's in an enclosed area, so you won't find it overpowering. Overall, it's got a decent amount of power for the price, and the features are solid, but the build quality isn't as good as we'd like and we'd suggest it's best used at home for basic entertainment needs.

While their processing innards aren't necessarily laggards, their diminutive frames preclude their being able to fit the most powerful parts. The ASUS F6Ve-B1 ($1,250 street) is a plain-looking, plus-size version of these beauties sporting the same screen size. The F6Ve-B1 wields more power than any other 13-inch laptop, but it does so at the expense of style and battery life.

Archive.org versionAsus is touting the $1,299 F6Ve-B1 as a thin-and-light desktop replacement, and considering the laptop's small form factor and impressive performance, the company has hit the inner ring of its target. The F6Ve-B1 scored way above average on almost all of our tests, most notably our 3D-graphics trials. As a result, battery life is shorter than we'd expect from this class of laptop. Nonetheless, finding an under-5-pound system with decent graphics performance is uncommon, making this a bearable trade-off. For a thin-and-light notebook, the F6Ve-B1 offers excellent performance and sleek style. This system is perfect for those who want to take their systems home on the commute: It’s powerful enough to be your primary PC and light enough to tote daily.The price may be a little steep for some, but the combination of features and portability is a good mix overall.

Archive.org versionThe ASUS F6Ve could have been a much nicer notebook if the same hardware were inside a more attractive chassis. The design looks dated, build quality isn’t up to par, and overall doesn’t feel like what you would expect to get for spending $1,299 on a 13.3” notebook these days. Hardware performance is excellent without any doubt, but it feels really out of place compared to the current ASUS offerings like the N81, W90, or even the 1000HE. If you really need a compact gaming notebook, move up barely one inch to the N81Vp. It outperforms the F6Ve in nearly every category, gets double the 3D performance, and looks a heck of a lot nicer. The ASUS F6Ve-B1 is a performance king among 13-inch notebooks, but there is room for improvement.

Archive.org versionThose looking for a very high performance laptop in a realtively compact and portable platform would do well to look at the ASUS F6Ve-B1. The system packs in a very high end processor and even a dedicated graphics processor into a 13.3-inch laptop that also has a very reasonable price tag. The downside to all this performance is that the system tends to run below average in terms of run time to similarly sized laptops and it can get quite warm on the bottom during heavy usage.

Archive.org versionThe F6V is a very good laptop, but don't believe the hype about the smell. Unless you're a dog, you can hardly smell anything. Thankfully, it's very good-looking, fairly quick and quite affordable. Laptops such as the Dell XPS M1330 give it a good run for its money, but if you're after something different, it's definitely worthy of consideration.

Archive.org versionThe unique design, strong mobility and powerful performance make the Asus F6V a great choice for mobile professionals with an eye for style. And don't forget the scent. The odd usability flaw and lack of software prevent it from winning us over, however.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470: Faster clocked HD 3450 and successor of the HD 2400 XT but with DirectX 10.1 and due to the new 55nm process, higher clockspeeds. Avivo HD video functions allow the decoding of HD videos.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
