Reviews for the Asus VivoBook S 14 OLED M5406WA
After the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 inside the Zenbook S16 only fulfilled its performance potential to a limited extent, we are daring to try again by taking a look at the VivoBook S 14. In doing so, this also raises the question of whether the Radeon 890M iGPU can come close to the Intel Arc 8.

Priced at Rs. 1,04,990, the ASUS Vivobook S 14 delivers a compelling blend of performance, features, and battery life that makes it a strong contender against its rivals. The laptop’s standout feature is undoubtedly its vibrant OLED display, which, coupled with the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor, is more than capable of handling everyday tasks, multitasking, and even casual gaming, outperforming competitors like the Snapdragon X Elite and Intel Core 200V processors. There’s also an excellent battery life of over 10 hours at the very least, which should be fine for most users. However, if you can compromise a bit on the performance front and want to squeeze more juice, the Acer Swift 14 AI with the Intel Core Ultra 5 226V processor is an excellent option.

We are pleasantly surprised by the ASUS Vivobook S 14 OLED M5406. Its biggest advantage is the fact that the performance is as good as the 16-inch sibling. The Ryzen 5 7535HS sustains a 3.34GHz clock in long stress which is almost 200MHz higher compared to the M5606 model. Also, the keyboard doesn’t get any hot. If you don’t care much about the higher resolution of the optional and more expensive 3K panel, the default 1200p OLED panel (ATNA40CT02-0 (SDC41A0)) is a great choice with its superb color accuracy, infinite contrast ratio, and full DCI-P3 coverage. You get the same amount of ports as the 16-inch iteration. However, the data transfer speed of the USB connectors of the Zen 3+ machine is limited to just 5 Gbps.

AMD Radeon 890M: The most powerful AMD iGPU as of mid 2024. It features 16 RDNA 3.5 architecture CUs (1024 unified shaders) running at up to 2,900 MHz. On average, the 890M finds itself very close to the GTX 1650 Laptop making it possible to play 2024 AAA games at 1080p with most settings set to Low.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
