Reviews for the Asus Zenbook 14 OLED UM3406HA
Asus also offers its Zenbook 14 OLED as a cheaper version featuring an AMD Ryzen 8000 processor—that even delivers better performance than the Meteor Lake variant. It does, however, face limitations when it comes to its RAM and its Full HD OLED panel which only has a 60 Hz refresh rate.

The Zenbook 14 OLED UM3406 has one significant advantage over the Intel version and that’s the higher 3D rendering multi-core performance while the AMD CPU runs cooler in in short and medium loads. Speaking of which, the Ryzen 7 8840HS can’t reach its official base clock in long stress but a frequency of ~ 3.00 GHz doesn’t look half bad for a thin and light 14″ machine. Also, the noise levels seem a bit lower than the Team Blue version. The battery life is outstanding – 19 hours of videos on a single charge! Still, this applies to our laptop with a non-touch 1200p display. Perhaps the autonomous work will be tanked if you pick a machine with the optional 2880×1800 120Hz screen.

The ASUS Zenbook 14 UM3406HA with its AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS processor is an excellent general purpose platform for daily computing, moderate content creation and light gaming. Offering a performance envelope capable of giving the Intel Core Ultra 7 equipped version of its sibling a run for its money while running cheaper than the Core Ultra 5 version at RM4,299, it proves to be a well-priced all rounder with superb value.

This 2024 Zenbook 14 OLED UM3406HA series built on AMD Hawk Point hardware is one of the best portable daily-driver laptops available today. It's the same chassis as the already versatile Zenbook 14 UX3405 model, but includes somewhat faster hardware for multitasking and sustained loads, comes in an exquisite Jade Black colors, and is generally more affordable than the Intel version, due to the offered configurations and specs.

One of Asus' countless other Zenbook 14 OLED models, the AMD Ryzen 7 7730U-based Asus Zenbook 14 OLED UM3402, earned a four-star recommendation in August 2023 and was recently ousted from our ultraportable roundup by none other than the Asus Zenbook 14X OLED (Q420). Joined by today's UM3406 in the under-$900 club, the UM3402 has a sharper screen but we griped that its performance trailed that of Intel systems. (Hence the Q420's recent position.) By contrast, the Ryzen 7 8840HS-packing Asus Zenbook 14 OLED Touch UM3406 can slug it out with Intel's finest and lasted four hours longer on battery power—reason enough to bestow it with our Editors' Choice award for frequent flyers in economy class.

The Asus Zenbook 14 OLED UM3406 is an exceptional budget laptop. Though it’s not much to look at, it provides great performance across a wide variety of benchmarks, long battery life, solid build quality, an excellent OLED screen, strong speakers, and a quality webcam. Even the laptop’s weaknesses, such as its keyboard and connectivity, are average for the price and competitive with alternatives. This is not a performance or gaming laptop, so it has its limits—but if you’re looking for an excellent all-around Windows laptop at a respectable price, it’s hard to beat.

The Asus Zenbook was an absolute pleasure to put through its paces. Last year's Zenbook was already a great device, but this year's version improved on its predecessor's shortcomings, namely its processing speed and slower memory. Asus created one of the best sub-$1000 laptops you can buy. Starting at $799, there isn't much to dislike about the Zenbook 14 OLED. The display is beautiful, the laptop is powerful, and it has top-notch performance and surprisingly great battery life. It can even play many of the latest games at satisfying graphical fidelity, making it a well-rounded laptop. The design might be a bit bland for some, but I find it elegant. It's part of the charm of the Zenbook 14 OLED. Asus has a real winner on its hands with this 14-inch laptop. If you are looking for a premium laptop and aren't looking for an Apple device, or a gaming laptop, then the Asus Zenbook 14 OLED (2024) should be your go-to option.

AMD Radeon 780M: Integrated graphics card in the Ryzen 7040 mobile series APUs based on the RDNA3 architecture with 12 CUs (= 768 shaders) and a clock speed of up to 3 GHz.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

The 8840HS isn't actually a new chip; instead, it's similar to the Ryzen 7 7840U but with a 5 W higher minimum TDP as well as higher clock speeds on the Ryzen AI NPU. The 8840HS has 8 SMT-enabled cores (16 threads) running at 3.3 GHz to 5.1 GHz. Those Zen 4 architecture cores are mated to the Radeon 780M integrated graphics adapter.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
